After a sufficient introduction to the pronunciation has been given, the study of formal grammar is taken up. In the first year, two-thirds of the time is given to the study of the grammar. Written exercises on the translation of English into the foreign idiom are required at least once each week, besides a large amount of black-board work, in the class-room. As soon as enough work has been done in the grammar, the reading of connected texts is begun. In the first year one of the three hours per week is devoted to exercises in reading, together with explanations of grammatical points connected with this reading. In the second and third years, most of the time is devoted to reading the best works in each department of literature, especially poetry, the drama and the novel. As it is impossible to do a very great amount of reading in the class, only the leading works in each department of literature are read. Beginning with the next term, outside parallel reading will be required, in addition to the amount read in the class-room. In connection with the reading, the professor in charge gives from time to time, short talks on the manners and customs, geography, history, and mythology of the country whose language is being studied. Together with this reading, a history of the literature, from its beginnings down to the present time, is studied, and especial attention is paid to the devlopment of the epic and lyric poetry, the drama, and the novel.
