It is particularly important that we remark this, as the necessary attendant upon all these sins, the impossibility of the forgiveness of which is spoken of in the text. If you carefully examine the context, you will perceive that I made no vain distinction between sins against practice and against principle, but that this was obviously uppermost in the mind of the apostle, for he adds in the twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth verses, He that despised Moses law, died without mercy, under two or three witnesses. Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who (and this marks the nature of the guilt of the wilful sinner) who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace Every sinner, therefore, to come under the charge of sinning wilfully, as it is employed in the text, must have heard of the remedy for sin, which God has, in mercy, offered to his fallen creatures, and must deliberately and finally have trampled it under foot. Every sinner, to incur this charge must have been the subject of the strivings of God s Spirit, and must have resisted and grieved, and finally quenched those strivings. Do you ask, where, then, shall we find examples of wilful sinners The unerring word of truth presents, alas far too fearful a number of them. Such, for instance, we cannot but fear, from the records of inspiration, was the great mass of the unbelievers in the antediluvian world, who had the knowledge of the truth, for Noah was sounding it in their ears during the whole century which preceded the deluge, yet did they persevere in sin until the...
