It is imperatively necessary that the forces be united if they are to win and hold the country districts for Christ. Three forms of such combination have been tested in various parts of the country until they have passed the stage of experiment, two of them applications of the federal principle, the third a form of union still more complete. They are: first, the church federation, such as has been already described, in which churches, worshiping apart, unite for common tasks; second, the federated church, composed of two or more churches of different denominations, each retaining its identity and organization, but uniting for work and worship under a single pastor; and third, the union denominational church, where two or more churches of different denominations are merged to form a new organization allied with the denomination of its choice. The results of such experiments have at least demonstrated that, however serious may be the differences of opinion as to the most practicable forms in which Christian forces in over-churched rural communities may combine, combination in some form is the most hopeful means of meeting the conditions that confront them. 1 Gill and Pinchot, The Country Church, pp. 144, 211.-.
