Fay Browne, a middle-aged solicitor from the small village of
Renham, witnesses a woman's apparent suicide in front of a train
and becomes deeply involved with the inquest, convinced that the
woman didn't jump but was in fact pushed. Subsequent disastrous
events lead Fay to suspect her husband for the first time in their
marriage, while also beginning to doubt her own sanity.
