When now the thirst of slaughter raged no more, And every sword was satiated with gore, Soon as the fell destroyers sought in vain, And found no victims to increase the slain, The people whom grim Medicis had led To draw these horrid crimes upon their head, In secret thought revolved the monstrous deed, And keen remorse made every bosom bleed. Pity rushed in with unresisted sway, And all their frantic fury died away. Scared at the ravage they themselves had made, They seemed to hear their country's voice upbraid Their guilty hands; and of her sons forlorn In dying groans the desolation mourn. (a) Soon Charles himself was chilled with pale affright, Surveyed the pile, and sickened at the sight; Remorse deep smote him with its vengeful dart, And with a cankered wound devoured his heart. His first dire culture, and the queen's control, Had blasted all the virtues of his soul, But stings of conscience even a throne infest, Not kings can pluck that scorpion from their breast. Though nurtured by a mother's early care, To brave remorse, and every crime to dare, He was not yet so obdurate and bold, But formed by nature of a softer mould. Grief preyed upon him with corroding rage, And nipped the blooming flower of his age. Scathed by th' Almighty's arm he sunk...
