William Leonard Courtney (1850-1928) was an English author, born at Poona, India, and educated at Oxford. In 1873 he became headmaster of Somersetshire College, Bath, and in 1894 editor of the Fortnightly Review. His works include: Studies on Philosophy: Ancient and Modern (1882), Constructive Ethics: A Review of Modern Moral Philosophy in its Three Stages of Interpretation, Criticism, and Reconstruction (1886), Studies New and Old (1888), Life of John Stuart Mill (1889), The Idea of Tragedy in Ancient and Modern Drama (1900), The Development of Maeterlinck and Other Sketches of Foreign Writers (1904), The Feminine Note in Fiction (1904), Rosemary's Letter Book: The Record of a Year (1909), In Search of Egeria: Episodes in the Life of Maurice West (1911) and Armageddon-and After (1914).
