Reviews

It's a pity that the Criterion Collection edition of these three films, excellent though it is, but always so pricy, seems the only one available in SA at present. These are the excellent films about young people in Poland during the Second World War, which made Wajda's reputation. Personally, I least like A Generation, because Kanal is so impressive, as a study of partisan forces operating in the sewers during the Warsaw uprising, as they battle the Nazis and their own fears, and Ashes and Diamonds is such a cleverly ambiguous study of the conflicts at the end of the war, as the Soviet invasion starts. It's star Zbigniew Cybulski was known as Poland's James Dean, though I also see Brando in him. Sadly, he died in 1967 in an accident at a railway station Having just said goodbye to his friend, Marlene Dietrich who was on the train, he jumped onto the train, slipped and fell, and was ru over by it.
