In 17HO, an act of Parliament was obtained, empoweringcertaiu trustees to sell the old palace, and to build a new one at Park-hall Farm, hall a mile from ihe town. i he old palace was sold, pursuaut to the act, to the late Sir Abraham Pitches, for 2..S00I. and ihe premises arc now occupied by a calico-printer, a tanner, and a pelt-monger. In this palace, now devoted to such ignoble uses, Abp. Parker, in 1573, entertained Queen Elizabeth, and all her retinae, retinue, consisting of the principal nobility of the kingdom. This magnificent entertainment lasted seven days. Th; parish church, which is a handsome gothic structure, contains some tine monuments; among which are those of the Archbishops Urindall, Whitgift, and Sheldon: the figure of the last, in a recumbent posture, is a very fine piece of sculpture, in white marble. Here are likewise the tombs of Archbishops Wake, Potter, and Herring.--Here was formerly a chanlry.--The adjaceut hills are well stored with wood, of which great quantities of charcoal are made for London. Market-day, Saturday, chiefly for oats and oatmeal; fairs, Jane 5, and Oct. t.; the latter is much frequented by the youth of both sexes, from London, for walnuts, &c. The post-office is open till 7 in winter, and 8 in summer, Saturday evenings excepted. On the left is a turnpike road to Lewisham; beyond it, ditto, 1 m. a turnpike road to East Bourne. On the right is Ealing Park, ( Hammond, esq.); on the left, 1 m. is AdA'ucomb House, (Earl of Liverpool); from it, ditto, about 2 m. at Addington, is the seat of J. Trecothick, esq.: beyond it, ditto, 2 m. is Purley, ( Johnson, esq.) Near it are other elegant villas. See Beddington, Ciielsham, &C. Inns, Greyhound, and King's Arms...
