The job was close to impossible... Gannon knew that even as he
volunteered for it. The chances of his even getting out alive were
not fat. As they reached Apache country, Gannon's surly Paiute
guides grew edgy. Gannon thought of the Regan woman, ready and
willing, and only fifty miles back. Then he thought of the kid,
held by the Apaches somewhere up ahead in that broken desert waste.
Gannon knew it was crazy to go on. But he was Gannon, and he had
made his promise. He went on.
