Not illustrated. 1888 Excerpt: ...the above extracts ate taken, he was evidently endowed with much vigour, firmness, and a strong sense of duty. He must have possessed good business habits, and took a more active interest in the affairs of his parish than many of his immediate predecessors appear to have done. He is the first minister of whom we have knowledge who examined and signed the parochial accounts. We have proofs of his activity in the investigations he made into the local charities, and which demonstrated the lax attention they had previously received. In the same year above noted we find this entry: --"paid for a booke for Mr Conant to register the gift money 00,10." This apparently soon bore fruit, as in the following year lie inserted a memorandum in the churchwardens' book, of which this is a copy: --"Memorandum yt this year 1675 Mrs Hannah Wescott widow did pay in fifty-six shillings for yeuse of ye poor of this parish, in full satisfaction for all the arrears of Mr Wescott's gift mony yt were then due and payable home to Chrislide 1674. Which mony was accordingly distributed as may be seen in ye booke of Accounts for gift mony. Richard Conant Vicar." This is followed by an extract from Philip Westcott's will, showing that the sum of fourteen shillings was to be paid annually out of his estate to the poor of East Budleigh. The above memorandum shows it had not been paid for four years. Again, in 1687 we find the following, also in the vicar's handwriting (excepting the signatures of the churchwardens): --"Memorandum that the arrears of mr Wottons gift mony for four years, and of his Legacy for two years, were this year recovered from Thomas Cowd of Salterton, by vertue of an order from the Commissioners for pious uses, by the Wardens of this Parish, as a...
