Mr. Macklin, at the age of 89, appeared on Covent Garden stage, in his favourite character of Sbylock, but his memory failing him in the second act, he addressed the audience, claiming their indulgence, he was received with great applause; there is only one instance previous to this of an actor appearing and performing at such an advanced age. Leveridge, the singer, sang on the stage at the age of 96. Jan. l6. The marquis de Luzerne, amhassador from his most Christian majesty, had his lirst audience of his Majesty to deliver his credentials. Jan. 28. Commodore Phillips, with the transports under his convoy, first landed in New South Wales, the convicts were put on shore, and Mr. Phillips caused the King's commission to be read, and assumed the office of governor; he landed 56l men, l92 women, and l8 children, convicts, and a military force of 2l2 men. Lord George Gordon was brought op to the court of King's-bench, to receive sentence for two libels, one on the Queen of France, and another on the criminal justice of the country, for the first libel he was sentenced to three years imprisonment, and for the second two years, and to pay a li no of 500/. and find security for his good bebaviour for l4 years. Died, at Rome, prince Charlen Edward Louis Casimir Stuart, known on the continent by the name of theChevalier de St. George, and in England as the young Pretender, he was son to James Francis prince of Wales, Sod of king James II.
