The government of Lower Canada is colonial, and is subject to the government of Great Britain. The present constitution is founded generally upon the principles of the British constitution, and was established in 1791. The civil government is administered by a governor, an executive council, a legis'ia'.ive council, and a house of assembly or representatives uf the people. The governor acts under a commission from the king of Great Britain. The executive and legislative councillors are appointed by the king. The executive council consists of seventeen persons, and the legislative council originally of fifteen, but has since been increased. The house of assembly at present consists of 88 members, being made up of one or two representatives ...
