Not illustrated.1847 Excerpt: ... The opinions of Dr. Baird are twice referred to in these "Observations," as an endorsement of the liberal and republican nature of Episcopal Methodism. Dr. B., with his eye fixed upon an all-absorbing topic, the voluntary principle, has expressed some very kind and liberal opinions respecting that system. The same amiable qualities, for which the Doctor is remarkable, have been as profusely lavished upon the Emperor Nicholas; as the readers of the public journals have recently seen. Few men, strangers in a distant land, and pressed with disease, would be insensible to acts of personal kindness; and fewer still, perhaps, of plain republicans, would have been insensible to imperial personal attentions manifested 'in the manner, and on the occasion so minutely and graphically described by the Dr.'s pen, in his account of the marriage of the Emperor's daughter. But that those personal attentions, and those affectionate domestic habits demonstrate the autocrat's liberal views of government, or his tolerant and even lamb-like exercise of power, we must be excused for not being able to perceive. The world knows that it is one of Dr. B.'s objects in his foreign tours, to furnish materials for some of the leading journals of this country. We have no particular evidence, to be sure, that this fact had any influence upon "the Autocrat of all the Russias;" but "verily" he has his "reward." However, we were somewhat struck with the comment upon his panegyric, in the fact, that while his ink was yet moist, the meek and liberal Nicholas, with his "noble brothers," pounced once more upon unhappy Poland, and wrung the last drop of blood from her heart.
