"Syria and the Syrians" is a contribution to the attempt to understand the present through the lens of the past. It is an epic chronicle of a people and a land that has seen it all and knows it all, as told and retold by scholars of different backgrounds and disparate eras. While this chronicle displays implicit notions of heroism and a nostalgic glorification of a bygone era, it is about real history, a real people, and a real land. The history is life-like. It provides entry into the "mind" of great ages, a return to an aesthetic world, and an introduction to the actions and ideas that helped shape our thinking for generations on end. It is a breathtaking blend of triumph, adventure, failure, and survival. It is also a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and contributions of a nation and a tribute to the important, perilous, and often-overlooked work of its people.

No other political trial in Lebanon and, indeed, the Arab World has been more controversial than the trial and execution of Antun Sa'adeh just before sunrise on July 8, 1949. The case is inescapably a tragedy. It was and still is the shortest and most secretive trial given to a political offender. Indicted for treason and for creating dissension, Antun Sa'adeh was tried on trumped-up charges based on falsified evidence and deliberate misapplication of the law. It was really nothing more than an open-and-shut exercise in accusation and punishment - a trial more appropriate to the cruel days of the Middle Ages than the supposedly civilized world of the 20th century. Since the trial was held, many complex issues have been raised, many more crucial than the actual fate of the accused: Why the secrecy and haste? Was it a fair trial? Was the offence political and, if so, why did the Lebanese State refuse to treat it as such? What did the Khoury regime hope to achieve from the trial? Did the penalty fit the crime? This book answers these and many more questions that until now have received cursory treatment as part of a general history rather than the thorough analysis they deserve.

Antun Sa'adeh (1904-1949) was a philosopher, writer, and politician. As an outspoken individual on the political stage, he was imprisoned numerous times for his beliefs. This book is a collection of scholarly studies that locate Antun Sa'adeh in the living context of ideas and actions of his time and offer an understanding of his place in history. The revolutionary character of Sa'adeh expanded beyond the narrow perspectives of his contemporaries and launched over their heads ideas which could only be taken up by later generations. These ideas have withstood the test of time as attested to by the high levels of interest which his writings continue to attract in Arabic political literature in his country and beyond. Providing a highly original comparative insight into Sa'adeh's world, the studies contained in this volume address some of the most persistent questions about Sa'adeh's personality, ideological outlook, and principal conclusions. Sa'adeh's commanding position and historical significance in the development of a modern national philosophy, as well as the immense impetus which he gave to political sociology in various fields, are explored and studied thoroughly. A valuable addition to the burgeoning scholarship on Sa'adeh, the book will be of interest to many professionals, as well as to scholars of history, Middle East studies, and political science.

A Man to Remember - In the Company of Antun Sa'adeh (Hardcover): Adel Beshara A Man to Remember - In the Company of Antun Sa'adeh (Hardcover)
Adel Beshara
R601 Discovery Miles 6 010 Special order

Antun Sa'adeh is an example of a thinker of the first order, at all times independent, self-confident, and self-respecting, producing his work in defiance of dispiriting conditions. During many years he had neither independent income nor abundant leisure; he lived his entire life dedicated to a single vision which he single-handedly developed; and, although his literary and political activity was great in its range and abiding results, he also had a very human side which, surprisingly, has remained largely unexplored. Biographical details of this remarkable man have never been over-abundant. What we know about Sa'adeh's private life is still very sketchy. What we know about his personal preferences is sketchier still. This is where this book comes in. Its purpose is to give some insight into Sa'adeh's life and intimate personal details and to present an idea of his personality, so far as an idea may be formed from exceedingly fragmentary recollections. The chief source of material comes from memoirs of individuals who befriended Sa'adeh at some point in his life. The book is not a biographical study of Sa'adeh in the traditional sense but a set of individual reflections and reminisces that cast light on the human and private side of his life.

Antun Sa'adeh, a nationalist thinker who lived from 1904 to 1949, was one of the major intellectual figures of modern Syria. The impact of his ideas has been felt in politics, literature and philosophy, as well as in the social sciences. Indeed, the publications for which he was best known ("The Rise of Nations", "The Ten Lectures", "Intellectual Struggle in Syrian Literature", and "The Folly of Immortality"), have had a broad influence on the politico-intellectual movement in Syria and throughout the Arab World. Sa'adeh's life was a unique blend of dedicated, perpetual struggle, righteous idealism, and theoretical pragmatism. He was not simply an outspoken figure on the political stage, but attempted the revolutionary treatment of paramount social and economic ills. This book is a collection of scholarly articles by leading authorities on Antun Sa'adeh's thought. The collection covers various aspects of his thought and not just his political views. The contributors to this volume discuss several aspects of Sa'adeh's thought, thus providing a guide to further study and reflection. The essays deal with specific issues, the arguments and counter-arguments that have been voiced, and they try, whenever possible, to take the various interpretations of various aspects of Sa'adeh's thought a few steps further. It provides a synopsis of the work done hitherto in the field, discusses the important studies published over the past fifty years, including the most up-to-date work, and at the same time identifies the main problems that have arisen in Arabic as well as English secondary sources. Thus it provides on the one hand a reference work summarizing previous research in the field and at the same time it is an original work of synthesis and new interpretations. It is one of the first works on Sa'adeh to look on many aspects of his thought by leading authorities in the field.
