The Year of Reading Dangerously - How Fifty Great Books Saved My Life (Paperback): Andy Miller The Year of Reading Dangerously - How Fifty Great Books Saved My Life (Paperback)
Andy Miller 1
R236 R185 Discovery Miles 1 850 Save R51 (22%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A working father whose life no longer feels like his own discovers the transforming powers of great (and downright terrible) literature in this laugh-out-loud memoir. Andy Miller had a job he quite liked, a family he loved and no time at all for reading. Or so he kept telling himself. But, no matter how busy or tired he was, something kept niggling at him. Books. Books he'd always wanted to read. Books he'd said he'd read, when he hadn't. Books that whispered the promise of escape from the 6.44 to London. And so, with the turn of a page, began a year of reading that was to transform Andy's life completely. This book is Andy's inspirational and very funny account of his expedition through literature: classic, cult and everything in-between. Crack the spine of your unread 'Middlemarch', discover what 'The Da Vinci Code' and 'Moby-Dick' have in common (everything, surprisingly) and knock yourself out with a new-found enthusiasm for Tolstoy, Douglas Adams and 'The Epic of Gilgamesh'. 'The Year of Reading Dangerously' is a reader's odyssey and it begins with opening this book...

Ignored by virtually everyone upon its release in November 1968, 'The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society' is now seen as one of the best British albums ever recorded. Here, Andy Miller traces the perilous circumstances surrounding its creation, and celebrates the timeless, perfectly crafted songs pieced together by a band who were on the verge of disintegration and who refused to follow fashion. EXCERPT 'Big Sky' contains some of the most beautiful, thunderous music The Kinks ever recorded, aligned to a vulnerability and warmth no other group - and I mean no other group - could ever hope to equal. It is a perfectly balanced production. On the one hand, the mesh of clattering drums and electric guitar never threatens to overwhelm the melody; on the other, the gossamer-light harmonies, Ray and Dave's vocal line traced by Rasa Davies' wordless falsetto, are bursting with emotion. When most of the instruments drop away at 1.20, the effect is effortlessly vivid - two lines where Davies' performance is both nonchalant and impassioned. The result is wonderfully, enchantingly sad, made more so perhaps by the knowledge that The Kinks will never again sound so refined or so right.

"Andy Miller's Teachers, Parents and Classroom Behaviour is the most useful, insightful and coherent account of understanding and managing behaviour in schools that I have read. It is also superbly written, making it a pleasure to read... if you buy only one book this year, then it should be this one." Educational Psychology in Practice"This elegantly crafted book contains thought-provoking implications for all branches of applied psychology, as well as educationists and policy makers... With an increasing focus in education on evidence-based practice, this book will be a valuable resource for practicing and trainee teachers and educational psychologists... [It] offers an extremely timely contribution to current developments in education."The Psychologist"I found the book fascinating and it has led me to think differently in a variety of situations... It has also impacted my views on the school ethos and teacher relationships. I will be recommending this book to members of the senior management team and staff who work with pupils with behavioural problems." Young Minds Magazine 68/2004The behaviour of students in schools is a matter of great concern. Legislation, media coverage and 'test cases' are flooding into the public consciousness at an increasing pace. The relative responsibility of teachers and parents is a particularly prominent and contentious issue. This book examines the reasons why strong statements of mutual recrimination and blame often occur in this area, before looking at policies and practices which are co-operative, preventive and proactive in nature. But this is not solely another book of tips and techniques. In addition to describing strategies with a proven evidence base, it also demonstrates, within a coherent framework, how and why these approaches achieve their aims. This book provides an in-depth understanding of key psychological factors for those in schools struggling in this vexed and pressing area and for that widening group of professionals charged with working in partnership to bring about demonstrable change.

The emotional impact of difficult and challenging behaviour in schools has never made it easy for professionals to respond in a calm and considered manner. This applies equally to teachers, senior staff in schools, support services and administrators. Yet the pressure to respond effectively continues to grow. "Challenging Behaviour in Schools" describes effective practical approaches which have been developed by schools and support services. It acknowledges that, in dealing with difficult behaviour, it is necessary not only to consider techniques but also the support processes that accompany them. The editors have each had extensive professional experience in this field, and are the organizers of the annual "New Directions in Behaviour Support" courses at Nottingham, which have encouraged and disseminated new practice over recent years. All the contributors have been associated with these courses and their accounts should be of direct value to senior staff, special needs co-ordinators and governors in schools, educational psychologists, support teachers and those involved in policy and planning.

Difficult pupil behaviour can reflect and exacerbate stresses within a school, increasing the potential for conflicts among teachers, parents and support staff. The need to acknowledge and overcome this in practice is fully recognised and is a central challenge addressed by this book. Challenging Behaviour in Schools describes effective practical approaches that have been developed by schools and support services. It contains chapters on behaviour support in mainstream primary and secondary schools, the organisation of support services and also looks at the ways parents and schools can work together. Other chapters outline whole school approaches to building better behaviour, as well as specific techniques. Challenging Behaviour in Schools will be of direct, practical value to all teachers, senior staff, special needs coordinators and governors in schools, educational psychologists, support teachers and all those involved in policy and planning.

Current debates and challenges are introduced within a diverse range of topics in cognition, learning and instruction, such as, intelligence, language development, dyslexia, maths anxiety, instructional psychology and inclusion. Similarly, topics covering social, emotional and behavioural issues in school - behaviour management and attributions, bullying, autism, school phobia, pupil identity and school ethos - are explored in terms of their roots in psychology theory and research and their high profile within public policy and decision making. This INSET-based book provides teachers and managers in schools with a practical guide to developing and maintaining high standards of behavior. Using their extensive experience, the authors emphasize planning policies which take account of the individual needs of the staff and pupils as well as whole-school administration. They encourage an experimental approach supported by many activities to guide the development process, and consider both the 'soft', human side of the development process, as well as the more predictable 'hard' side involving audit, planning, implementation and review.

Slow Motion - Stories About Walking (Paperback): Andie Miller Slow Motion - Stories About Walking (Paperback)
Andie Miller
R533 Discovery Miles 5 330 Out of stock

Slow Motion: Stories About Walking has been written over a period of six years; having become something of a documentary project, witnessing transformation in South Africa through the eyes of pedestrians across the economic, racial and age spectrum.

Though it inevitably looks at the issue of crime, and how we have moved from a race-based to a class-based society and pedestrians of all colours continue to be marginalised and thought of as second-class citizens in an increasingly autocentric society, it is essentially an optimistic book. It tells the stories of South Africans (and visitors) who have chosen to “reclaim the streets” from predators and traffic.

While the focus is primarily on Johannesburg, several of the stories are about Cape Town, contrasting the experience of walking in these two cities. Other international cities such as Los Angeles, Paris, London and Mumbai are also visited along the way. The style of the book is such that, while it can be opened anywhere and each story can be read and enjoyed on its own, the stories are interlinked, as people’s paths inevitably cross. There is a bigger story at play as well.

The band of pedestrians includes writers, artists, political activists, disabled people, dogs and their owners, Walk for Life members, Jews on the Sabbath, domestic workers, refugees, babies learning to walk, and even a golfer and a caddie.
