And so Dr. Seuss' famous Cat in the Hat introduces young readers to the fascinating world of seeds and flowering plants. This title and others form part of a series of books that takes an off-beat look at nature and natural sciences through a fun combination of Seussian rhymes and zany illustrations. Aimed at early readers - from four to seven year olds - the books are designed to bridge the gap between concept books written for preschoolers and more formal non fiction titles that require fluent reading skills. By presenting the facts in a lively and rhythmic manner, they provide the critical foundation upon which complex facts and ideas can eventually be built.

Dignity (Hardcover): Jean-Bertrand Aristide Dignity (Hardcover)
Jean-Bertrand Aristide; Introduction by Cristophe Wargny; Foreword by Carrol F Coates; Translated by Carrol F Coates
R1,106 Discovery Miles 11 060 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

Dignity is Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's story of his three years of exile, from the coup that deposed him (September 30, 1991) to the UN Security Council vote in favour of military intervention (July 31, 1994). He offers an intensely personal journal of events, one that records both his doubts and his determination in the face of criticism and uncertainty. Introductory materials familiarise the reader with events from the fall of Jean-Claude Duvalier (January 1986) through the first months of Aristide's presidency. The Afterword provides information on the period since Aristide's return (October 15, 1994). In a moving narrative, Aristide describes the tension of the September 1991 military coup, when he ran the risk of execution at any moment. He supplies the gruesome details of the stream of murders and summary executions perpetrated by, or with the direct approval of, the military junta. Throughout, he interjects his philosophical reflections on inhumanity, on Haiti's social history, and on his vision of his own leadership. ""Aristide has clearly identified with the principles and tactics of Jesus for a long time"", writes Carrol Coates in his afterword. ""The Haitian people have envisioned him in the role of Saviour or Messiah and have even portrayed him so in many wall paintings"". In his own words, Aristide conveys his alternation between elation at the continued support and celebratory receptions offered him by France, Canada and the Haitian communities of the United States, and the anguish provoked by the slow pace of international negotiations and, in particular, the curious talks at Governor's Island. There, UN negotiators ran between the temporary residences of President Aristide and General Cedras in order to produce the agreement that not only contained inexplicable concessions to the junta but also was ignored by the junta for a full year after the date set for surrender of power. ""Dignity"" is a touching and readable account by Aristide, one that refutes much disinformation circulated about him during his exile and frequently names sources. It also constitutes a major document for historians and students of the difficult institution of democracy in the Caribbean.

Ateliers have produced the greatest artists of all time - and now that educational model is experiencing a renaissance. These studios, a return to classical art training, are based on the nineteenth-century model of teaching artists by pairing them with a master artist over a period of years. Students begin by copying masterworks, then gradually progress to painting as their skills develop. On every page, Aristides uses the works of works of Old Masters and today's most respected realist artists to demonstrate and teach the principles of realist drawing and painting, taking students step by step through the learning curve yet allowing them to work at their own pace. Unique and inspiring, Classical Drawing Atelier is a serious art course for serious art students.

A Nation by Design - Immigration Policy in the Fashioning of America (Paperback): Aristide R. Zolberg A Nation by Design - Immigration Policy in the Fashioning of America (Paperback)
Aristide R. Zolberg
R689 Discovery Miles 6 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

According to the national mythology, the United States has long opened its doors to people from across the globe, providing a port in a storm and opportunity for any who seek it. Yet the history of immigration to the United States is far different. Even before the xenophobic reaction against European and Asian immigrants in the late nineteenth century, social and economic interest groups worked to manipulate immigration policy to serve their needs. In "A Nation by Design," Aristide Zolberg explores American immigration policy from the colonial period to the present, discussing how it has been used as a tool of nation building.

"A Nation by Design" argues that the engineering of immigration policy has been prevalent since early American history. However, it has gone largely unnoticed since it took place primarily on the local and state levels, owing to constitutional limits on federal power during the slavery era. Zolberg profiles the vacillating currents of opinion on immigration throughout American history, examining separately the roles played by business interests, labor unions, ethnic lobbies, and nativist ideologues in shaping policy. He then examines how three different types of migration--legal migration, illegal migration to fill low-wage jobs, and asylum-seeking--are shaping contemporary arguments over immigration to the United States.

"A Nation by Design" is a thorough, authoritative account of American immigration history and the political and social factors that brought it about. With rich detail and impeccable scholarship, Zolberg's book shows how America has struggled to shape the immigration process to construct the kind of population it desires.

Orations, Volume I (Hardcover): Aelius Aristides Orations, Volume I (Hardcover)
Aelius Aristides; Edited by Michael Trapp
R525 Discovery Miles 5 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Publius Aelius Aristides Theodorus was among the most celebrated authors of the Second Sophistic and an important figure in the transmission of Hellenism. Born to wealthy landowners in Mysia in 117, he studied in Athens and Pergamum before he fell chronically ill in the early 140s and retreated to Pergamum's healing shrine of Asclepius. By 147 Aristides was able to resume his public activities and pursue a successful oratorical career. Based at his family estate in Smyrna, he traveled between bouts of illness and produced speeches and lectures, declamations on historical themes, polemical works, prose hymns, and various essays, all of it displaying deep and creative familiarity with the classical literary heritage. He died between 180 and 185. This edition of Aristides, new to the Loeb Classical Library, offers fresh translations and texts based on the critical editions of Lenz-Behr (Orations 1-16) and Keil (Orations 17-53). Volume I contains the Panathenaic Oration, a historical appreciation of classical Athens and Aristides' most influential work, and A Reply to Plato, the first of three essays taking issue with the attack on orators and oratory delivered in Plato's Gorgias.
