This book offers a comprehensive overview of the basic science and clinical evidence for non-arthroplasty interventions in the adult knee. It aims to cover all aspects of joint-preserving knee surgery, from injectable therapies such as platelet-rich plasma and stem cell therapies to surgical interventions such as meniscal repair and replacement, ligament reconstructions, and osteotomies. Following discussion of clinical assessment and imaging, individual chapters focus on specific clinical problems, including patellofemoral joint disorders, chondral injuries, and bone tumors. For each condition, a thorough overview is provided, describing clinical assessment, management (including surgical and non-surgical methods), and novel therapies. The contributors are experts in their fields from across Europe and are drawn from the worlds of clinical and academic orthopedic surgery. This book is unique in its coverage of the entire span of non-arthroplasty knee surgery and its focus on both clinical and basic science aspects. It will be helpful for knee surgeons and those engaged in research on knee-related topics, but also for students and other physicians involved in the care of patients with disorders of the knee.
At the interface of biology, chemistry, and materials science, this
book provides an overview of this vibrant research field, treating
the seemingly distinct disciplines in a unified way by adopting the
common viewpoint of surface science.
Often along vast expanses, ancient societies traded certain commodities that were considered valuable either for functional or symbolic reasons - or, rather, a mixture of both factors. A Taste for Green addresses latest research into the acquisition of jade, turquoise or variscite, all of which share a characteristic greenish colour and an engaging appearance once they are polished in the shape of axes or assorted adornments. Papers explore how, in addition to constituting economic transactions, the transfess of these materials were also statements of social liaisons, personal capacities, and relation to places or to unseen forces. The volume centres on two study areas, Western Europe and Mexico/Southwest US, which are far apart not just in geographical terms but also with regard to their chronology and socioeconomic features. While some North and Mesoamerican groups range from relatively complex farming societies up to state-like organisations during the 1st and 2nd millennia AD, the European counterparts are comparatively simpler polities spanning the 5th-3rd millennia BC. By contrasting the archaeological evidence from diverse areas we may gain insights into the role that production/movement of these green stones played in their respective political and ritual economies. Also, we think it useful to compare the scientific approaches applied to this question in different parts of the globe, specially Asia.
This book provides up-to-date guidance on the diagnosis and treatment of the most important complex fractures of the limbs, including fractures of the proximal and distal humerus, fractures and dislocations of the elbow, fractures of the distal radius, pelvis, acetabulum, distal femur, proximal tibia, tibial pilon, calcaneus and osteoporotic knee fractures. The most complex articular fractures are analyzed, soft tissue coverage is reviewed, and the management of open fractures and nonunions is described and illustrated. Other chapters consider damage control management and immediate bone fixation in the polytrauma patient, skeletal reconstruction and rehabilitation of complex fractures of the limbs. The book offers guidance to orthopaedic surgeons on which treatment options afford the best preservation of fully functional joints around the fractured bone. With this goal in mind, the authors have developed strategies that can restore full articular function of the limbs in both the short and the long term. Complex Fractures of the Limbs will be an invaluable aid to orthopaedic surgeons in treating patients with this very common and important clinical problem.
As haemophilia is a life-long condition, continuing supervision by a group of medical personnel is required. In many countries this is provided by comprehensive care haemophilia centres where staff of all specialities concerned with treatment- haematologists, paediatricians, nurses, physiotherapists, orthopaedic surgeons - have specialized knowledge. This new book is a definitive resource on the current aspects and issues around haemophilia. Complications of haemophilia care are well covered in chapters on inhibitors, and musculoskeletal problems, as are all the latest developments in the field of haemophilia.
This book will be important for scientists involved in environmental research particularly in filling data gaps for risk assessment. It also will highlight key methods used in studying biological targets both from a toxicity standpoint and pharmacological activity. It provides a systems pharmacology/toxicology approach to computational toxicology, linking chemical exposures to genes, diseases, and complex biological/disease pathways. It also provides the discussion of new approaches to study chemical such as biological target elucidation and move this into computational models. Overall the book expands the computational focus of chemicals and biological interactions into the field of herbal and traditional medicines. It is noteworthy that the book reaches beyond pharmaceutical toxicology. The book will be a useful academic course book for both graduate and undergraduates studying pharmacology. It applies to areas such as Computational Toxicology; Systems biology; chemical-protein interactions; Interactions between Traditional Chinese Medicines/herbal medicines and Western therapeutics. Cross-promote this book with Big Data in Predictive Toxicology.
Typically, manuals of pediatric hematology-oncology are written by specialists from high-income countries, and usually target an audience with a sub-specialist level of training, often assisted by cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment facilities. However, approximately 80% of new cases of cancer in children appear in mid- and low-income countries. Almost invariably, general practitioners or general pediatricians without special training in oncology will look after children with malignancies who enter the health care system in these countries. The diagnostic facilities are usually limited, as are the treatment options. The survival figures in these conditions are somewhere below 20%, while in high-income countries they are in the range of 80% for many childhood cancers. Pediatric Hematology-Oncology in Countries with Limited Resources is the only book of its kind to provide specific guidance applicable to limited resource settings and builds up from the foundation of general practitioner or general pediatrician competence. Written and edited by leaders in the field, this manual educates physicians on the essential components of the discipline, filtered through the experience of specialists from developing countries, with immediate applicability in the specific healthcare environment in these countries.
An Eponymous Dictionary of Economics is a fascinating and accessible reference work with comprehensive coverage of the field of economics from Adam Smith's Problem through Minkowski's Theorem to Zellner's Estimator. Eponymy - the practice of affixing the name of the scientist to all or part of what he/she has found - has many interesting features but only a very few attempts have been made to tackle the subject lexicographically in science and art. This is the first eponymous dictionary of economics ever published in any language. There are hundreds of eponyms and the average economist will probably be acquainted with, let alone be able to master, a relatively restricted number of them. The Dictionary fills this void in a manageable volume that describes all relevant economic eponyms. Some rare but interesting eponyms are also included, many entries are cross-referenced and all have a succinct bibliography for further reading. Julio Segura and Carlos Rodriguez Braun have assembled a unique Dictionary that will be an invaluable and much welcomed reference book for economic journalists, economists and economic scholars at all levels of academe, and in all areas of economics and its associated fields.
This book provides clear instruction on the surgical treatment of joint problems in adult hemophilia patients. The procedures applicable to specific joints, including the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle, are carefully reviewed with the aid of high-quality illustrations. The surgical treatment of articular hemophilic pseudotumors and bone cysts is also considered. In addition, clinically relevant information is provided on a range of topics, such as the treatment of hemophilic hemarthrosis, the imaging of hemophilic joints, hematological perioperative management, anesthesia, rehabilitation and pharmacoeconomics. Finally, the controversial issues of postoperative thromboembolic prophylaxis and the role of COX-2 inhibitors in hemophiliacs are reviewed. The guidance provided draws on both the authors' extensive personal experience and an in-depth review of the pertinent literature. The book offers an excellent, up-to-date account of knowledge on musculoskeletal problems and approaches to joint surgery in adults with hemophilia. It will be of value to orthopedic surgeons, rehabilitation physicians, hematologists, radiologists and pharmacy researchers.
A significant number of Holocene societies throughout the world have resorted at one time or another to the making of paints or carvings on different places (tombs, rock-shelters or caves, openair outcrops). The aim of the session A11e. Public images, private readings: multi-perspective approaches to the post-Palaeolithic rock art, which was held within the XVII World UISPP Congress (Burgos, September 1-7 2014), was to put together the experiences of specialists from different areas of the Iberian Peninsula and the World. The approaches ranged from the archaeological definition of the artistic phenomena and their socioeconomic background to those concerning themselves with the symbolic and ritual nature of those practices, including the definition of the audience to which the graphic manifestations were addressed and the potential role of the latter in the making up of social identities and the enforcement of territorial claims. More empirical issues, such as new recording methodologies and data management or even dating were also considered during this session.
This book reviews current knowledge on the diagnosis and treatment (surgical and non-surgical) of cartilage defects at the knee joint. In the discussion of diagnosis, the focus is primarily on imaging findings, particularly those obtained with MRI. The remainder of the book is devoted to the full range of current conservative and surgical treatments, with attention to both treatment indications and results as reported in the recent literature. In reviewing non-surgical treatment, oral and intra-articular medical management is evaluated and rehabilitation and physical therapy are also considered. The three main types of surgical technique - microfracture surgery and similar procedures, mosaicplasty and related techniques, and autologous chondrocyte transplantation - are then extensively discussed in a series of highly informative chapters. This book will be of great practical value for clinicians, assisting in daily decision making.
Dendrimers are hyperbranched molecules with well-defined nanometer-scale dimensions. Important technological applications of these systems, both in biomedicine and materials science, have been recently proposed. Liquid crystal dendrimers are fascinating materials that combine the characteristics of dendrimers with the anisotropic physical behaviour and molecular self-organization typical of liquid crystals. This unique association of physical and chemical properties, together with the possibility of multi-selective functionalization put forward by dendrimers, opens new perspectives for applications. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a powerful experimental technique applied in materials science and an important tool to the study of molecular organization and dynamics. This book presents an introduction to dendrimers properties with special insight into liquid crystal dendrimers and a detailed description of the NMR theory and experimental techniques used in the investigation of these materials. It also discusses recent NMR research results on liquid crystal dendrimers, with emphasis on molecular order and dynamics studies.
