The Costa Blanca has long been the best known Hot Rock winter sun venue for climbers wanting a break from the grim northern winter. The reasons the place became popular in the first place are same reasons that this popularity has endured; easy access, loads of quality accommodation, a benign winter climate, and of course an amazing amount of fantastic climbing on everything from roadside boulders to magnificent mountains. The relationship between business and human rights has emerged in the last two decades as one of the most pressing issues in the field of business ethics. Do corporations have human rights responsibilities? If so, what is the nature of those responsibilities and do they differ in any significant way from those of governments? Is it reasonable or realistic to expect corporations to respect human rights in environments where governments, particularly in the developing and underdeveloped world, need economic development and have a limited capacity and/or interest in enforcing human rights standards and laws? The contributors to this groundbreaking volume take up these questions, examining them from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Topics discussed include the debates leading to the creation of the ISO 26000 standard and the United Nations human rights framework for business entities, as well as the nature and limits of the human rights responsibilities of business, the roles and responsibilities of international trade bodies like the World Trade Organization in protecting human rights, and the implications of the current debate for international trade agreements and trade with China. The contributors also explore the effectiveness of voluntary human rights standards in the textile and clothing trade, mining, advertising and the pharmaceutical industries. Scholars and students in management, philosophy, political science, sociology and law will find this volume a great resource, as will activists, managers and policy makers.
Globalization has altered in significant ways the tools available to regulate international commerce. One result is the emergence of ethics codes, codes of responsible conduct, and best practice codes designed to win adherence to internationally acceptable norms of conduct on the part of corporations and other organizations interacting in the global marketplace. This volume looks at these developments with particular focus on five topic areas: respect for human rights, treatment of labor, bribery and corruption, environmental protection, and international finance and the control of money laundering. What is significant about these developments is the emerging emphasis on self-regulation as the primary method for raising standards of corporate conduct. The contributors examine the reasons for the emergence of ethical codes and the phenomenon of self-regulation within the context of globalization and look at the role of national governments, international government institutions and other international organizations in shaping and enforcing them. They also study the implications of these developments for corporate governance and the changing roles of national and international institutions in the regulation of international commerce. Authoritative and engaging, Ethics Codes, Corporations and the Challenge of Globalization will be of great interest to scholars and practitioners in the areas of business, economics, political science, labor, and corporate environmentalism.

This book takes the coverage in the Peak section of the well-received Northern Limestone Rockfax from 2004 (the Yorkshire section will be published later) and expands this with better photographic coverage, more cliffs and more routes. Anthony Cragg (*1949) is one of the most important international sculptors of the present day. The British artist, who lives in Wuppertal, was Rector of the Academy of Art in Dusseldorf until 2013 and has won many awards. From the beginning his creative work has found inspiration in Nature as a model. Cragg's large - format sculptures of metal, marble, wood and glass are derived from organic natural shapes and present a fascinating aesthetic. In the foreground is the material as the sculpture's strongest means of expressi on. In the time - consuming development processes during which the work is formed and the material and surface are treated, Cragg's sculptures literally "grow" into the space, so that they have an almost intrinsic character or with their convolutions and pro tuberances evoke endlessly growing structures. This volume documents new works as well as specimens from the sculptor's collection of fossils and minerals for the first time - a remarkable premiere

Biblical ethics and eloquence reached a pinnacle with the great "writing" Prophets. Prophethood has also been central to Islam. Muhammad, its final messenger, is coupled with Allah in the Islamic faith, through confession or Shahadah. Is it proper, or feasible, to bring these two realms together, separated as they are by more than ten centuries? Many in each community of faith would disapprove. Yet there are clear common denominators the central role of personality; the mystery of language and inspiration; the bearing of circumstance and situation; and, through all these, the incidence of suffering. Among the Biblical Prophets, a basic descriptive for their vocation and meaning is the sense of "burden". The title of the book is taken from Surah 73.5 of the Qur'an where Muhammad understands that he is to undergo the onset of a "a heavy saying", or a "weighty word". Exploration of this mutual theme leads to common features. While the "weight" Qur'an-wise is the obligation to give divine words perfect reproduction; for the Biblical Prophets the onus is more inherently personal, and is reflected in the essential loneliness of vocation. The Weight in the Word attempts to explore an alignment of Prophethood in the Bible and in Islam in one denominator, against the odds of mutual alienation. In the Qur'an, "God and Messenger" represent the dual unity of creed and command; for Christian theology, via Messiah crucified, the theology of Prophethood is found in knowing "the Weight in the Word" by the wounds in the soul, and "the Word made flesh".
Cultures of decolonisation combines studies of visual, literary and material cultures in order to explore the complexities of the 'end of empire' as a process. Where other accounts focus on high politics and constitutional reform, this volume reveals the diverse ways in which cultures contributed to wider political, economic and social change. The book demonstrates the transnational character of decolonisation, thereby illustrating the value of comparison - between different cultural forms and diverse places - in understanding the nature of this wide-reaching geopolitical change. Individual chapters focus on architecture, theatre, museums, heritage sites, fine art and interior design, alongside institutions such as artists' groups, language agencies and the Royal Mint, across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Europe. -- .

Over the last two decades, exploration of the deep subsurface biosphere has developed into a major research area. New findings constantly challenge our concepts of global biogeochemical cycles and the ultimate limits to life. In order to explain our observations from deep subsurface ecosystems it is necessary to develop truly interdisciplinary approaches, ranging from microbiology and geochemistry to physics and modeling. This book aims to bring together a wide variety of topics, covering the broad range of issues that are associated with deep biosphere exploration. Not only does the book present case studies of selected projects, but also treats questions arising from our current knowledge. Despite nearly two decades of research, there are still many boundaries to exploration caused by technical limitations and one section of the book is devoted to these technical challenges and the latest developments in this field. This volume will be of high interest to biologists, chemists and earth scientists all working on the deep biosphere.
