Something isn't going quite right for the Sherwood Strikers. Richest side in the League, packed with star players - and wallowing down near the bottom of the table. Veteran manager Joss Morecombe is a hard man to face up to, but he seems to have given up caring. Has he lost his touch? In a barnstorming climax, Morecombe's young players take matters into their own hands, with exciting results...

From 1988 to 2017 David Ross was the Highland Correspondent of The Herald. His patch stretched from the Mull of Kintyre in the south to the Shetland island of Unst in the north; and from St Kilda, in the West, to the whisky country of Speyside in the east. From his home on the Black Isle he covered all the big stories, from the fight against a nuclear waste dump in Caithness to plans to remove half a mountain on the island of Harris. He helped the first community land buyout in modern times in Assynt, covered in depth the anti-toll campaign on the Skye Bridge, the efforts to save Gaelic and protect ferry services. In Highland Herald he reflects on the important issues which affected the Highlands and Islands during his time. He tells how his late father-in-law, the Gaelic poet Sorley MacLean, helped him. He had never written in depth about Sorley when he was alive, as it would have been `excruciatingly embarrassing for both of us', but does so now.

From abandoned structures that have long ceased to take you anywhere to today's feats of engineering, Bridges is a pictorial celebration of 150 suspension bridges, iron bridges, stone bridges, aqueducts, viaducts, railway bridges, footbridges and rope bridges. Organised in sections such as abandoned bridges, classic bridges and superstructures, the book contains an immense range of wooden, stone, iron, steel and concrete bridges. There are tiny village bridges and vast bridges, narrow bridges and motorway-wide bridges, bridges that act as dams and bridges that support buildings, covered bridges, famous bridges and little-known gems. From San Francisco's Golden Gate bridge to the 21st century Millau Viaduct in France - the tallest bridge in the world, from the Roman aqueduct in Segovia, Spain, to farmers still building bamboo bridges, the book draws examples from all over the world. Ranging from the Rocky Mountains to Siberia and Iran, a picture emerges of not only how new technologies have made it possible for bridges to be built, but also how bridges have themselves been catalysts for social change. And when they have been abandoned, such as in former gold rush towns, these bridges tell their own stories of how the world moves on. Presented in a landscape format and with 150 outstanding colour photographs, Bridges is a stunning collection of images.

A student of Plato and a teacher of Alexander the Great, Aristotle is one of the towering figures in Western thought. A brilliant thinker with wide-ranging interests, he wrote important works in physics, biology, poetry, politics, morality, metaphysics, and ethics. In the Nicomachean Ethics, which he is said to have dedicated to his son Nicomachus, Aristotle's guiding question is what is the best thing for a human being? His answer is happiness. "Happiness," he wrote, "is the best, noblest, and most pleasant thing in the world." But he means not something we feel, not an emotion, but rather an especially good kind of life . Happiness is made up of activities in which we use the best human capacities, both ones that contribute to our flourishing as members of a community, and ones that allow us to engage in god-like contemplation. Contemporary ethical writings on the role and importance of the moral virtues such as courage and justice have drawn inspiration from this work, which also contains important discussions on responsibility, practical reasoning, and on the role of friendship in creating the best life. This new edition combines David Ross's classic translation, lightly revised by Lesley Brown, with a new and invaluable introduction and explanatory notes. A glossary of key terms and comprehensive index, as well as a fully updated bibliography, add further value to this exceptional new edition. Features * This new edition of one of the founding texts of moral philosophy combines David Ross's classic translation, lightly revised by Lesley Brown, with a new and invaluable introduction and notes to aid readers in their understanding of Aristotle's intricate arguments. * Widely admired translation, sparingly revised to retain its qualities while paying special attention to key terms, enhancing understanding, eliminating unintentional ambiguity, and incorporating the latest scholarly thinking. * Invaluable introduction covers Aristotl

Charles Edward Stuart (31 December 1720 - 31 January 1788), was commonly known in Britain during his lifetime as The Young Pretender, and Bonnie Prince Charlie. He was the second Jacobite pretender to the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland. He was born in Italy and was the eldest son of James Francis Edward Stuart, who was the son of James II of England. Charles instigated the unsuccessful Jacobite uprising of 1745, in which he led an insurrection to restore his family to the throne of the Great Britain, which ended in defeat at the Battle of Culloden. That battle that ended the Jacobite cause. Charles's flight from Scotland after the uprising has rendered him a romantic figure of heroic failure in some later representations. In 1759 he was involved in a French plan to invade Britain which was abandoned following British naval victories.

In 1776, American Patriots attempted to destroy the British flagship Eagle using a man-operated semi-submersible, the Turtle, in New York harbour. The attack failed, but the idea stuck. Almost 90 years later, the CSS Hunley successfully rammed into the Federal sloop USS Housatonic with a spar torpedo. The Housatonic became the first ship in naval history to be sunk by a submarine. The World's Greatest Submarines features the most significant submarines built, from the German U-9 - which sank three British cruisers on 22 September 1914 - through the huge Japanese I-400 class to the great nuclear-powered submarines of the Cold War, such as the USS Los Angeles and Soviet Oscar class. Also included are the `undersea cruiser' Surcouf; the highly successful Type VII U-boats of World War II; and the latest attack and ballistic missile submarines, such as HMS Astute, USS Virginia, the Chinese Type 094 and the Russian Yasen class. Each entry includes a brief description of the submarine's development and history, a colour profile or cutaway, key features and specifications. Packed with more than 200 artworks and photographs, The World's Greatest Submarines is an accessible guide for those interested in naval history.
