A semi-sequel to Disney's 1940 classic 'Fantasia' which features
the original film's most famous sequence - the Mickey Mouse
adventure 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' - plus seven other all-new
animated interpretations of classical music. Highlights include the
interwoven stories of a group of 1930s New Yorkers accompanied by
Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue', the volcanic eruptions which
illustrate Stravinsky's 'Firebird Suite', and the story of Noah,
his ark, and his assistant Donald Duck, played out to the strains
of Elgar's 'Pomp and Circumstance'.

Yury Grigorovich choreographs this live performance of Dmitri
Shostakovich's work, performed by the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow in
2016. The story follows a young fisherman who falls in love with a
beautiful dancer with links to the local mafia.
Two episodes from the documentary series featuring performances by
the All-Star Orchestra, which is comprised of the best players from
30 American orchestras. As well as performances, the series
includes interviews with the players and conductor Gerard Schwarz,
providing insight into each piece of music. The episodes 'The New
World and Its Music' and 'Politics and Art' feature works by
Dvorák, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and Shostakovich.
Andris Nelsons conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in this
performance of Shostakovich's Symphony No.8, recorded live at the
Lucerne Festival in 2011.

Maisky to perform the world premiere of Russian composer Rodion
Shchedrin's double concerto for piano, cello and orchestra,

Lucerne Symphony Orchestra.
Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich is the subject of this film
about his life by Tony Palmer. Shostsakovich's intensely dramatic
music fully matched Palmer's own characteristically dynamic and
expressive style. Central to the film is the relationship between
Shostakovitch and Stalin, and the terrible price which
Shostakovitch paid for his survival. Ben Kingsley stars as the
composer.
