The Multilingual Illustrated Dictionary of Aquatic Animals and Plants provides a unique reference to the names of 1532 species of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, seaweeds and other fishery products that are landed worldwide. The names of these species can vary significantly between neighbouring regions of a country, from the size of the fish, from the stage of its life cycle, from the season of the year, and from its degree of treatment after capture. Co--published by the European Commission and Fishing News Books, the Multilingual Illustrated Dictionary of Aquatic Animals and Plants seeks to address this problem and to eliminate much of the existing confusion. New to the Second Edition of this acclaimed Dictionary is the addition of Finnish and Swedish to each existing entry. The Dictionary has been expanded to include new species and illustrations. For each entry, the following information is given: Reference number (the number given to the species within the index); Scientific (Latin) name; Family name; English name; Dutch name; French name; Danish name; German name; Greek name; Italian name; Portuguese name; Spanish name; Finnish name; Swedish name. Comprehensively illustrated, the New Second Edition of the multilingual Illustrated Dictionary of Aquatic Animals and Plants is an essential reference for all involved in the commercial fishing industries both within and beyond the boundaries of the European Union
A joint production by six international organizations, this manual explores the conceptual and theoretical issues that national statistical offices should consider in the daily compilation of export and import price indices. Intended for use by both developed and developing countries, it replaces guidance from the United Nations that is now more than a quarter-century old and thus badly outdated. The chapters cover many topics; they elaborate on the different practices currently in use, propose alternatives whenever possible, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative. Given its comprehensive nature, the manual is expected to satisfy the needs of many users in addition to national statistical offices and international organizations, particularly businesses, policymakers, and researchers.
The present situation of data protection in health informatics in Europe can be described as alarming. Notwithstanding the ever increasing use of information technology, a decade has passed since the appearance of the council of Europe Data Protection Convention and the recommendation on Automated Medical Data Banks, without much progress being achieved. To enable the best use of information technology in the health sector, urgent action needs to be taken. The causes for concern stem from two major factors, Firstly, when the question is asked whether the principles of data protection are being respected in the health information sector, it is impossible to give a definite answer. Secondly, the participants at the working conference, from their personal non-systematic observations shared the opinion that in the fast majority of cases the principles and recommendations have not properly been implemented. Experience from the field shows that in the health sector the people involved are often indifferent and in some cases reluctant to ensure the implementation of data protection measure. Both the indifference and possible even some of the reluctance may arise from the general lack of awareness about the issues involved. This makes the implementation of the required organizational measures difficult.

ECDIN (Environmental Chemicals Data and Information Network) has been created within the framework of the environmental research program of the Joint Research Centre of the Commission of the European Communities in Ispra(Italy). ECDIN is a factual databank. All data fed into the databank have been evaluated by experts. They cover a wide variety of parameters and properties for the evaluation and control of environmental risks associated with chemicals. ECDIN is based on the identification data for more than 120,000 chemicals in the European Inventory of Existing Substances (EINECS). For this first CD-ROM edition, about 1,700 of the best described data sets have been collected. These data will be updated by the Joint Research Centre. The substances in the database are covered under the following headings: - Identification, - Chemical structure information, - Chemical and physical data, - Analytical methods, - Use of the compound, - Toxicity, - Occupational health and safety, - Odour and threshold values, - Ecotoxicity and environmental behaviour, - Civil protection. All fields are searchable via full text search or via indexes. Hardware requirements: IBM PC or compatible, MS DOS 3.1 or higher, hard disk with at least 2 Mb free, 640 Kb RAM, EGA, VGA or Hercules graphics card, CD-ROM player.
The Permanent Inventory of AGricultural REsearch Projects (AGREP) is an information system on current projects in agriculture and related fields in the Member States of the European Communities (Belgium, Denmark, Federal Republic of Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom). Its creation is based upon a regulation of the Council of Ministers of the European Communities concerning the coordination of agricultural research (Council Regulation No 1728174 of 27 June, 1974). AGREP covers agriculture in an extensive sense of the word, i.e. including fields like fisheries and forestry, land use and development, conservation of nature, veterinary medicine, food science and technology, as well as agricultural economics and rural sociology. A detailed scope description is given in the subject classification facets "fields of research" and "subject areas" as presented on the introductory pages of the two printed volumes. The data base is fully computerized. It is available in printed form and on magnetic tape. On-line access is offered by EURONETIDIANE (DIrect Access Network for Europe). The data base is updated annually. The ,1980 issue of AGREP contains about 21.000 title citations of agricultural research projects. AGREP is a cooperative system. The national focal points (NFPs) collect input and provide it in an agreed format to the Commission which sponsors the management of the system and the provision of output to the Member Countries.
