The story follows Jean Valjean (played by Fredric March in the 1935 version, and by Michael Rennie in the 1952 film), a prisoner who breaks his parole and spends the next two decades fleeing from obsessive police inspector Javert (Charles Laughton/Robert Newton). In his quest for personal redemption, Valjean adopts Cosette (Rochelle Hudson/Debra Paget), daughter of impoverished prostitute Fantine (Florence Eldridge/Sylvia Sydney), and is eventually elected as town mayor. But it's not long before Valjean's past, in the shape of Inspector Javert, comes back to haunt him.

Marion) on a broken-down barge. When they rescue Irish sailor Matt Burke (Charles Bickford) from drowning, he falls in love with Anna. She is, however, reluctant to reveal details of her past... In 'Mata Hari' (1931) exotic dancer Mata (Garbo) is working as a German spy during the war. She seduces General Shubin (Lionel Barrymore) in order to succeed in her duties. She later falls for and becomes involved with Lieutenant Alexis Rosanoff (Ramon Novarro). When the general discovers her affair, however, Mata finds herself having to take drastic measures to ensure her cover isn't blown. In 'Queen Christina' (1933) Garbo plays the 17th Century Swedish queen who escapes an undesirable political marriage by running away and disguising herself as a man. When she falls in love with a Spanish ambassador, they have to liaise secretly, realising their destiny is doomed. In 'Anna Karenina' (1935), adapted from Leo Tolstoy's classic novel, Anna (Garbo), the wife of a villainous Russian aristocrat (Basil Rathbone), falls for cavalry officer Count Vronsky (Fredric March). Anna soon finds herself giving up everything for love but in time the situation becomes too much to bear.

Collection of four films starring Paul Newman. In 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' (1969), outlaws Butch (Newman) and Sundance (Robert Redford) are finding it increasingly difficult to make a living in the Wild West. Eventually deciding to cut their losses, the pair head for a new life in Bolivia in the company of their friend Etta Place (Katharine Ross). However, when they reach their destination, it seems their problems are only beginning - especially when they discover they now have to rob banks speaking Spanish. In 'The Hustler' (1961), low-life pool player Fast Eddie Felson (Newman) begins a downhill slide after losing to Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason). However, gambler Bert Gordon (George C. Scott) sees the potential in the boy, takes him in, teaches him the art of the hustle, and sets him on the road to another thrilling pool hall confrontation with the unbeatable Fats. In courtroom drama 'The Verdict' (1982) Newman plays Frank Galvin, a failed lawyer battling to regain his dignity and give up his dependence on alcohol. He takes on a case of medical misconduct in which a woman has lapsed into a coma after being given too much anaesthetic in childbirth, and in so doing is forced to take on a prominent and powerful Boston Catholic hospital. Finally, 'Hombre' (1967) is an adaptation of Elmore Leonard's novel about a cowboy who has been raised by Apache Indians. John Russell (Newman)'s multi-cultural roots make him the natural leader of a mixed bag of passengers when they are ambushed by outlaws on a trek across the desert.
