One of the most important challenges facing the European Union over the next few decades is demographic: as birthrates continue to decline and the population ages, immigration will be needed to sustain a sufficient working-age population. This volume takes that fact as a point of departure for analyzing patterns and prospects of immigration from the Middle East and North Africa to Europe, taking into account existing migration links and current EU migration policies as well as demographic, economic, and political developments in the Middle East and North Africa.
In the past decade, there has been a trend towards the global "harmonization" of migration statistics, largely inspired by international bodies and organizations that require comparative data. This volume provides an accessible account of the history of migration measurement in Europe and analyzes the current conceptualizations of migration and data-gathering procedures across twelve European countries. Based on this analysis, the authors provide critical insight into the migrant stocks and flows in their own countries and comment on recent trends in migration scholarship, such as the feminization of migration or the diversification of migrant's origins.
English summary: Change of system in 1989 marks an historic watershed, and the break-up of the communist bloc triggered an historically unprecedented economic, cultural and political transformation that also transformed the self-perception of western European states. This is particularly manifest in Central Europe. A look at this region helps to overcome the still effective East-West dichotomies and leads us to ask what are the pan-European consequences of these transformation processes. German text.
Both European and American cities, in particular major cities with strong and diversified economies, attract immigrants from all over the world. The segregation of migrants within a city as well as the affordability and quality of housing for migrants are central issues that affect the quality of life in general. Finding a place to live is a crucial aspect of the process of successful structural integration of migrants in host societies besides finding employment and gaining access to good education. On the one hand, the housing conditions and the spatial distribution patterns of migrants in a city can be considered important indicators for the status quo of the structural integration in the receiving society; on the other hand, housing policies are an important part of overall social policy at the local level with a strong impact on future processes of integration among migrants and their descendants. The Institute for Urban and Regional Research invited prominent scholars from the United States and from throughout Europe to reflect the present situation concerning immigration, the typical housing conditions for migrants and the public policies of local authorities on housing. Behind prejudices it became obvious that local policies can learn from each other. With the establishment of Europe as a research area in which researchers, scientific knowledge and technology circulate freely the transatlantic dialogue is becoming weaker and the cooperation within Europe stronger. This observation turned out as an additional motivation to signal that the Europe-US dialogue is useful and should continue. The current edition makes a contribution to this mutual learning process.
English summary: This volume is the opener for the Migration and Integration series and aims at a disciplinary reintegration of relevant research. Many disciplines are concerned with migration and integration processes from various perspectives, with different methods and theoretical concepts. There is a lack of transdisciplinary cooperation for clarification of concepts, theory development and empirical evidence. The present reader strives to settle these observable deficits and presents 13 contributions to migration and integration research from different disciplinary backgrounds. The constributions include the presentation of fundamental disciplinary approaches, questions and perspectives as well as concrete research questions in order to characterise the respective empirical or conceptual approaches. The reader serves as a source of information and introduction into the topic. It aims primarily at students interested in this subject matter, but also at a broader audience who wants to gain comprehensive and broad insight into the topic. German text.
This concept paper is a joint product of the Institute for Urban and Regional Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna and the European Forum of Migration Research in Bamberg. It is based on intensive discussions between the reseachers of CLIP in 2006 and 2007 regarding how the cities should be analysed and which questions are relevant. The main aim of the concept paper is to show the relevant theoretical and terminological concepts and thoughts in the field of housing which were helpful in guiding the research within the cities. The concept paper is one of the written products of the first module. Other analytical products include the city reports, which can be downloaded from the Internet, and the Overview Report which will be published as a written document. To address the stakeholder in the field of housing policy, recommendations for local governments and national and EU decision makers will be published in separate documents.
