A thrilling untold adventure based on the acclaimed Star Trek: Picard TV series! Starfleet was everything for Cristobal Rios-until one horrible, inexplicable day when it all went wrong. Aimless and adrift, he grasps at a chance for a future as an independent freighter captain in an area betrayed by the Federation, the border region with the former Romulan Empire. His greatest desire: to be left alone. But solitude isn't in the cards for the captain of La Sirena, who falls into debt to a roving gang of hoodlums from a planet whose society is based on Prohibition-era Earth. Teamed against his will with Ledger, his conniving overseer, Rios begins an odyssey that brings him into conflict with outlaws and fortune seekers, with power brokers and relic hunters across the stars. Exotic loves and locales await-as well as dangers galore-and Rios learns the hard way that good crewmembers are hard to find, even when you can create your own. And while his meeting with Jean-Luc Picard is years away, Rios finds himself drawing on the Starfleet legend's experiences when he discovers a mystery that began on one of the galaxy's most important days... "The Republic has fallen.

Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi has lost everything . . .
Everything but hope.
"
Tatooine--a harsh desert world where farmers toil in the heat of two suns while trying to protect themselves and their loved ones from the marauding Tusken Raiders. A backwater planet on the edge of civilized space. And an unlikely place to find a Jedi Master in hiding, or an orphaned infant boy on whose tiny shoulders rests the future of a galaxy.
Known to locals only as "Ben," the bearded and robed offworlder is an enigmatic stranger who keeps to himself, shares nothing of his past, and goes to great pains to remain an outsider. But as tensions escalate between the farmers and a tribe of Sand People led by a ruthless war chief, Ben finds himself drawn into the fight, endangering the very mission that brought him to Tatooine.
Ben--Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, hero of the Clone Wars, traitor to the Empire, and protector of the galaxy's last hope--can no more turn his back on evil than he can reject his Jedi training. And when blood is unjustly spilled, innocent lives threatened, and a ruthless opponent unmasked, Ben has no choice but to call on the wisdom of the Jedi--and the formidable power of the Force--in his never-ending fight for justice.

Special Advocates in the Adversarial System (Paperback): John Jackson Special Advocates in the Adversarial System (Paperback)
John Jackson
R966 Discovery Miles 9 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The last twenty years have seen an unprecedented rise in the use of secret courts or 'closed material proceedings' largely brought about in response to the need to protect intelligence sources in the fight against terrorism. This has called into question the commitment of legal systems to long-cherished principles of adversarial justice and due process. Foremost among the measures designed to minimise the prejudice caused to parties who have been excluded from such proceedings has been the use of 'special advocates' who are given access to sensitive national security material and can make representations to the court on behalf of excluded parties. Special advocates are now deployed across a range of administrative, civil and criminal proceedings in many common law jurisdictions including the UK, Canada, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Australia. This book analyses the professional services special advocates offer across a range of different types of closed proceedings. Drawing on extensive interviews with special advocates and with lawyers and judges who have worked with them, the book examines the manner in which special advocates are appointed and supported, how their position differs from that of ordinary counsel within the adversarial system, and the challenges they face in the work that they do. Comparisons are made between different special advocate systems and with other models of security-cleared counsel, including that used in the United States, to consider what changes might be made to strengthen their adversarial role in closed proceedings. In making an assessment of the future of special advocacy, the book argues that there is a need to reconceptualise the unique role that special advocates play in the administration of justice.

She has no intention of serving under anyone else, of course; her only interest is escape. But when a young Trill, Emony Dax, discovers a powerful interstellar menace, Georgiou recognizes it as a superweapon that escaped her grasp in her own universe. Escorted by a team sent by an untrusting Federation to watch over her, the emperor journeys to a region forbidden to travelers. But will what she finds there end the threat-or give "Agent Georgiou" the means to create her old empire anew?

The Republic is in crisis. The Sith roam unchecked, vying with one another to dominate the galaxy. But one lone Jedi, Kerra Holt, is determined to take down the Dark Lords. So many warring Sith weaving a patchwork of brutality--with only Kerra Holt to defend the innocents caught underfoot.
Sensing a sinister pattern in the chaos, Kerra embarks on a journey that will take her into fierce battles against even fiercer enemies. With one against so many, her only chance of success lies with forging alliances among those who serve her enemies--including a mysterious Sith spy and a clever mercenary general. But will they be her adversaries or her salvation?

The city of Peterborough stands about 75 miles north of London on the East Coast Main Line (ECML). It is one of the railway's most important interchanges for both passenger and freight traffic; the services north and south are complemented by one of the most important east-to-west links, taking a variety of workings from Leicester and Nottingham to the cities and ports of East Anglia. It is a location where rail enthusiasts can be entertained by a variety of workings with the unexpected a possibility. Looking at both passenger and freight workings, John Jackson documents the rail movements around one of the key locations and most enduringly popular enthusiast spots on the East Coast Main Line.

Anyone who has tried to watch freight moving on UK rails in the last few years will realise these are challenging times for the rail freight industry. Stand by any railway line and you may have to wait a while to see a freight train of any sort pass by. Indeed, many large areas of our rail network see no regular freight traffic at all. Against a backdrop of declining volumes, the competition between the various freight companies has never been so acute. The 'big five' freight haulage companies, DB Cargo, Freightliner, GB Railfreight, Direct Rail Services and Colas Rail, dominate the market. It is no surprise that all five companies include the ubiquitous Class 66 within their fleets, with over 300 examples of the class operating across the country. The observer could be forgiven for thinking that these are the only traction in use today. Of course they dominate the current UK freight scene but that is by no means the whole story. Numerous other classes of both diesel and electric locomotives contribute to the mix of rail freight traction on display in the UK today. Class 37 diesels and a reducing number of AC electric locomotives have notched up half a century of freight haulage. They can be seen today working alongside newer examples such as the Class 68 and 70 locomotives. With an array of rare and unpublished images, John Jackson offers a fascinating overview of the freight scene today.

the Life and Ministry of Elijah
Known for his in-depth yet accessible teaching, beloved author R. T. Kendall delves into the life of one of the most famous and most relatable persons in the Old Testament: Elijah.
Drawn from a popular sermon series Dr. Kendall preached at Westminster Chapel in London, this discussion taken from 1 and 2 Kings traces the prophet's life and ministry from his first appearance and his confrontation with King Ahab until the time he is taken up to heaven. Kendall shows how even this revered prophet--an ordinary man with many imperfections--was used tremendously by God. A great study for both individuals and groups.

It is now some forty years since the term 'Second Generation EMU' entered rail industry parlance. The British Rail (BR) Class 313 heralded a new era back in 1976/77 with BR's first order of suburban passenger trains with both a pantograph (for 25Kv AC) and shoegear (for 750V DC 'third rail'). These units continue to see daily service both on north of London commuter services and on Sussex's Coastway services. Since those early days, over forty classes of EMU have entered traffic throughout what is now, of course, a privatised railway. More and more operators are able to opt for their use over DMUs as more of the country benefits from installation of an electrified railway. This book offers a look at all the classes found in the UK, as well as a look at the country's electrified lines.

In this book, the author takes full advantage of the diversity on offer as a regular user of this rail ticket. It offers the choice of three of the country's main lines stretching north to south across the ticket's boundaries (West Coast, Midland and East Coast) and a wide variety of other railway lines in between. With Milton Keynes at its southern edge and north to Sheffield and Doncaster, from Staffordshire on the West Coast Main Line eastwards to Lincolnshire and South Humberside, it is an area rich in contrasts. The rover user is spoilt for choice of passenger train operators. Express services are provided by Virgin's Pendolinos and LNER's Class 91s and, soon, state-of-the-art Azumas, among others. These are complemented by a wide variety of both diesel and electric local services ensuring every day's journey is different. Formed in 1999, GB Railfreight was one of several new rail freight operators to appear after the privatisation and break-up of British Rail in the 1990s. After winning a contract to operate infrastructure trains for Railtrack in 2000 the company enjoyed a long period of rapid growth to become one of the UK's principal rail freight companies, later expanding into passenger operations. Today, with a fleet of over 100 locomotives, the company operates a wide and varied range of services across the UK. This book aims to take a look at the operations and fleet of this successful rail business.
