Maurice Blanchot (1907-2003) was one of the most important writers of the twentieth century. His novels, shorter narratives, literary criticism, and fragmentary texts exercised enormous influence over several generations of writers, artists, and philosophers. In works such as Thomas the Obscure, The Instant of my Death, The Writing of the Disaster, The Unavowable Community, Blanchot produced some of the most incisive statements of what it meant to experience the traumas and turmoils of the twentieth century. As a journalist and political activist, Blanchot had a public side that coexisted uneasily with an inclination to secrecy, a refusal of interviews and photographs, and a reputation for mysteriousness and seclusion. These public and private Blanchots came together in complicated ways at some of the twentieth century's most momentous occasions. He was among the public intellectuals participating in the May '68 revolution in Paris and helped organize opposition to the Algerian war. During World War II, he found himself moments away from being executed by the Nazis. More controversially, he had been active in far-right circles in the '30s. Now translated into English, Christophe Bident's magisterial, scrupulous, much-praised critical biography provides the first full-length account of Blanchot's itinerary, drawing on unpublished letters and on interviews with the writer's close friends. But the book is both a biography and far more. Beyond filling out a life famous for its obscurity, Bident's book will transform the way readers of Blanchot respond to this major intellectual figure by offering a genealogy of his thought, a distinctive trajectory that is at once imaginative and speculative, at once aligned with literary modernity and a close companion and friend to philosophy. The book is also a historical work, unpacking the `transformation of convictions' of an author who moved from the far-right in the 1930s to the far-left in the 1950s and after. Bident's extensive archival research explores the complex ways that Blanchot's work enters into engagement with his contemporaries, making the book also a portrait of the circles in which he moved, which included friends such as Georges Bataille, Marguerite Duras, Emmanuel Levinas, Michel Foucault, and Jacques Derrida. Finally, the book traces the strong links between Blanchot's life and an oeuvre that nonetheless aspires to anonymity. Ultimately, Bident shows how Blanchot's life itself becomes an oeuvre-becomes a literature that bears the traces of that life secretly. In its even-handed appraisal, Bident's sophisticated reading of Blanchot's life together with his work offers a much-needed corrective to the range of cruder accounts, whether from Blanchot's detractors or from his champions, of a life too easily sensationalized. This definitive biography of a seminal figure of our time will be essential reading for anyone concerned with twentieth-century literature, thought, culture, and politics.

Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe (1940-2007) was a professor of philosophy, and also a poet, a translator and a playwright. His life and work were dedicated to the philosophical and political movements of the post-1968 era, from his communal life together with Jean-Luc Nancy to his collaborations with Jacques Derrida. These movements also carried him towards disparate modes of writing such as poetry and theatre. The tension between Lacoue-Labarthe's timely and untimely meditations governs the approach in this study, the first to attempt an accessible and comprehensive account of this forceful thinker.

This book presents lecture materials from the Third LOFAR Data School, transformed into a coherent and complete reference book describing the LOFAR design, along with descriptions of primary science cases, data processing techniques, and recipes for data handling. Together with hands-on exercises the chapters, based on the lecture notes, teach fundamentals and practical knowledge. LOFAR is a new and innovative radio telescope operating at low radio frequencies (10-250 MHz) and is the first of a new generation of radio interferometers that are leading the way to the ambitious Square Kilometre Array (SKA) to be built in the next decade. This unique reference guide serves as a primary information source for research groups around the world that seek to make the most of LOFAR data, as well as those who will push these topics forward to the next level with the design, construction, and realization of the SKA. This book will also be useful as supplementary reading material for any astrophysics overview or astrophysical techniques course, particularly those geared towards radio astronomy (and radio astronomy techniques).

The work of French writer and essayist Maurice Blanchot (1907-2003) is without doubt among the most challenging the twentieth century has to offer. Contemporary debate in literature, philosophy, and politics has yet to fully acknowledge its discreet but enduring impact. Arising from a conference that took place in Oxford in 2009, this book sets itself a simple, if daunting, task: that of measuring the impact and responding to the challenge of Blanchot's work by addressing its engagement with the Romantic legacy, in particular (but not only) that of the Jena Romantics. Drawing upon a wide range of philosophers and poets associated directly or indirectly with German Romanticism (Kant, Fichte, Goethe, Jean Paul, Novalis, the Schlegels, Hoelderlin), the authors of this volume explore how Blanchot's fictional, critical, and fragmentary texts rewrite and rethink the Romantic demand in relation to questions of criticism and reflexivity, irony and subjectivity, narrative and genre, the sublime and the neutre, the Work and the fragment, quotation and translation. Reading Blanchot with or against key twentieth-century thinkers (Benjamin, Foucault, de Man), they also examine Romantic and post-Romantic notions of history, imagination, literary theory, melancholy, affect, love, revolution, community, and other central themes that Blanchot's writings deploy across the century from Jean-Paul Sartre to Jean-Luc Nancy. This book contains contributions in both English and French.

Adoration - The Deconstruction of Christianity II (Paperback): Jean-Luc Nancy Adoration - The Deconstruction of Christianity II (Paperback)

This second volume in Nancy's The Deconstruction of Christianity explores the stance or bearing that would be appropriate for us now, in the wake of the dis-enclosure of religion and the retreat of God: that of adoration. Adoration is stretched out toward things, but without phenomenological intention. In our present historical time, we have come to see relation itself as the divine. The address and exclamation--the salut!--that constitutes adoration celebrates this relation: both the relation among all beings that the world is and what is beyond relation, the outside of the world that opens us in the midst of the world. A major contribution to the contemporary philosophy of religion, Adoration clarifies and builds upon not only Dis-Enclosure, the first volume in this project, but also Nancy's other previous writings on sense, the world, and the singular plurality of being.

The Royal Festival Hall is one of the masterpieces of post-war British architecture. It was visited during construction by Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, Frank Lloyd Wright and others; and it duly received critical acclaim when opened. This monograph outlines the social background to its design in post-war welfare state Britain; discusses its acoustic design; and presents it as a fine example of the technology and detailing of the period. The illustrated essay, superb photographs, and a wealth of technical working details make this an invaluable resource for many types of reader - architects, engineers, acoustic designers, music lovers, 1950s and Festival of Britain enthusiasts, and ordinary lovers of the building itself. Now, in a new revised edition to mark the 50th anniversary of the buildings inauguration, an additional chapter brings the story, in text and illustration, of the building's progress to date. Launched in 1991, the Architecture in Detail series attracted immediate acclaim and now comprises more than 60 titles. These books are highly collectable documents, each focusing on a celebrated building. The series covers all parts of the architectural spectrum, and the individual buildings are selected for their exceptional character, innovative design or technical virtuosity. Each volume contains a text by a respected author; a sequence of colour and black-and-white photographs; a set of technical drawings; and working details. These titles are essential to every architectural library, and will appeal equally to the professional and student, or indeed anyone with an appreciation of buildings.

Giancarlo De Carlo (born 1919) has been at the centre of the European architectural scene for half a century. His philosophy has found expression in half a century of coherent architectural work: writings, teaching, design projects, publishing and -- centrally -- built and inhabited places layered into an existing world. By the 1980s he had become one of the most important and penetrating architectural thinkers of our time. Astonishingly, since then his architectural designing has itself been renewed with a series of sinuous, luminous and amazingly youthful, even playful, building forms most of which have not before been widely published. The book, which gives a survey of De Carlo's work from the beginning in the early 1950s up to the present day, accompanies an exhibition on the architect in the Centre Pompidou in Paris and other venues.

"McKean’s compelling book reveals how companies must compete for customers as ‘people’ in this new customer era and why shareholders will suffer if they falter." Horst H. Schulze, Founding President, Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company

"The rise of customer power is one of the most important trends in business today. As John McKean points out in his compelling new book, successful firms are using the power of the Internet and related technologies to humanize their interactions with customers. This means building trust and working toward a win-win outcome based on convenience, simplicity, honesty and openness." Erik Brynjolfsson, Schussel Professor, MIT Sloan School Co-Director, Center for eBusiness at MIT

"Deluged by technology buzzwords and designer customer approaches, it’s sometimes easy to forget that human beings are the real secret to business success. But John McKean hasn’t forgotten it, and his powerful book is a testament to the fact that, in the final analysis, all business achievements boil down to plain, old-fashioned human interaction." Don Peppers and Martha Rogers, Peppers and Rogers Group, authors of The One-to-One Future and One to One B2B

"John McKean’s simple yet powerful book is a timely reminder that an organization’s people and technology can too often divorce themselves from customers rather than enabling what really matters - each human interaction. John McKean clearly illustrates how to transform a customer’s reaction from ‘I don't want to be loyal, and will shop around on price, value, range and convenience’ into ‘You showed that you understand me as a consumer and person, so I trust you and am loyal to you.’ " Clive Humby FIDM, Chairman, Tesco Customer Analytics

… Less than five percent of the world’s firms achieve the full potential of their customer relationship initiatives … The rest are caught in its paradox … The core message of Information Masters is simply that the frenzied race back to customers is being won by those who have developed a broad and deep customer information competency. The winners have accomplished this by balancing technology with investments in the predominantly "non-technological" determinants of customer information competency — people skills, processes, organization structure, culture, leadership, and information itself. "You might think it’s lack of technology that accounts for your inability to forge stronger, more rational and cohesive relationships with your customers, but John McKean’s excellent study shows that technology is likely to be the least of your worries. Information competency is the result of the people you have in place, the processes they follow, the culture of your firm, and many things other than technology. Don’t start your journey toward CRM without reading this book!" Don Peppers, co-author, The One to One Fieldbook: The Complete Toolkit for Implementing a 1to1 Marketing Program (Doubleday, 1999) "Managing customer relationships is too important to be left to the technologists to figure out. McKean has nailed it when he forces you to consider and evaluate the other ‘stuff’ — people, processes, and culture, and, by the way, the data itself is awfully important." John Peterson, AT&T Vice President, Database Marketing "Gaining competitive advantage from information is not as much a technological challenge as it is about people, culture, and leadership. John illustrates and quantifies a better way to build an information advantage to serve both customers and shareholders." David Overton, Vice President, Merchandise Planning, Sears "Getting closer to customers is a business imperative — but it’s all too easy to become seduced by the latest technology promises and consultancy mantras. John McKean offers an invaluable insight into the real drivers of success which organizations serious about CRM must put in place." Robert Wyllie BA (Hons)APMI, Group Database Marketing, Scottish Widows "The revolution in information technology is undermining many traditional business models and creating untold confusion. But in confusion lies opportunity. McKean shows how to see past the mesmerizing advances in computers and communications to create a coherent business strategy that draws on both technological and non-technological capabilities." Professor Erik Brynjolfsson, Director of the MIT Program on Electronic Commerce and Marketing, MIT Sloan School of Management "One of the greatest business challenges is not the mastery of new technologies, but the creation of a culture able to keep pace and grasp the opportunities these technologies present. This is nowhere better illustrated than in John McKean’s pursuit and exploration of that enigma, the profitable customer, through his book Information Masters." Trevor Dukes, Business Systems, W H Smith "In the first decade of the new millennium, customer information competency will be understood as one of the great differentiators between ‘great’ and ‘mediocre’ organizations; John McKean’s book identifies the characteristics of those organizations that possess customer information competency and he provides a roadmap for firms seeking to achieve it. For information-based organizations, reading this book will not only save needless expense, but it will help improve overall focus, marketing productivity, and profit." James Bauer, Vice President, National Consumer Services, Chase Manhattan Bank "McKean’s landmark book offers the best insights I’ve seen into our biggest challenges for building profitable customer relationships in the digital age … the non-technological ones." Glen Kaiser, Director of Marketing and Information Systems, AT&T WorldNet
