Hosts and Guests - Poems (Paperback): Nate Klug Hosts and Guests - Poems (Paperback)
Nate Klug
R348 R286 Discovery Miles 2 860 Save R62 (18%) Ships in 7 - 11 working days

An exciting new collection from a poet whose debut was praised by Colorado Review as "a seduction by way of small astonishments" Nate Klug has been hailed by the Threepenny Review as a poet who is "an original in Eliot's sense of the word." In Hosts and Guests, his exciting second collection, Klug revels in slippery roles and shifting environments. The poems move from a San Francisco tech bar and a band of Pokemon Go players to the Shakers and St. Augustine, as they explore the push-pull between community and solitude, and past and present. Hosts and Guests gathers an impressive range: critiques of the "immiserated quiet" of modern life, love poems and poems of new fatherhood, and studies of a restless, nimble faith. At a time when the meanings of hospitality and estrangement have assumed a new urgency, Klug takes up these themes in chiseled, musical lines that blend close observation of the natural world, social commentary, and spiritual questioning. As Booklist has observed of his work, "The visual is rendered sonically, so perfectly one wants to involve the rest of the senses, to speak the lines, to taste the syllables."

Neil Tainton, John Klug
R115 R95 Discovery Miles 950 Save R20 (17%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

Based on research and experience in the construction, preparation and maintenance of pitch and outfield, this is a guide for improving the general standard of cricket surfaces at all levels of the game, from school level to national level. The pitch and field form the basis of a good game of cricket, but of all sporting surfaces, the cricket pitch is one of the most demanding to manage. The first challenge is to grow grass on heavy clay that is compacted and denied water for days on end until it resembles a strip of concrete. This is then subjected to the pounding of rock-hard cricket balls and the wear of bat and boot. The next challenge is to get the battered turf ready in time for the next game.;The authors are currently cricket pitch consultants to the United Cricket Board of South Africa, and are actively involved in the preparation of fields for the Cricket World Cup in 2003. This book is a reference for all those involved in the game of cricket, from primary school to professional.

Instances of Islamophobia - Demonizing the Muslim "Other" (Hardcover): Seyyed-Abdolhamid Mirhosseini, Hossein Rouzbeh Instances of Islamophobia - Demonizing the Muslim "Other" (Hardcover)
Seyyed-Abdolhamid Mirhosseini, Hossein Rouzbeh; Contributions by Nora Amath, James Carr, Steven Fink, …
R1,497 Discovery Miles 14 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Books on aspects of Islamophobia have been proliferating in the past decade but so are the instances of this phenomenon worldwide. The diverse aspects of the issue; the complicated sociopolitical nature of concerns in this regard; and the increasing number of geographical settings where the issue is relevant, cause numerous problems and questions that remain far from exhausted even in the case of multiple treatments of similar topics and contexts. Therefore, faces and facets of Islamophobia in different countries around the world need to be extensively explored, and awareness should be raised on the part of Muslim communities, Western populations, and non-Western non-Muslims. Chapters of this volume, written by authorities on Islamophobia from around the world, examine various instances of the topic and explore different discursive contexts such as media coverage and manipulation; political debates and discourses; and general attitudes and attitude-building in the public sphere. The book aims to further extend and expand discussions on the issue and to highlight some hitherto less discussed concerns.

Children as Equals - Exploring the Rights of the Child (Paperback): Kathleen Alaimo, Brian Klug Children as Equals - Exploring the Rights of the Child (Paperback)
Kathleen Alaimo, Brian Klug; Contributions by Marta Santos Pais, Cynthia Price Cohen, Malfrid Grude Flekkoy, …
R1,264 Discovery Miles 12 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Children as Equals explores the subject of children's rights. The twelve chapters are written by authors whose disciplines include history, law, philosophy, psychology, and sociology. The book explores such questions as: What is a child? How did the movement for the rights of the child originate, and what is its relation to the human rights movement? What do we mean by rights? To which rights are children entitled? Should their rights vary with age and competency? What about the rights of parents? The complete text of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), to which nearly all the chapters refer, is reproduced in an Appendix. Several chapters examine the implications of two of the Convention's fundamental principles: 'the best interests of the child' and 'the evolving capacities of the child.' Four chapters focus on the legal status of children in the United States, especially in connection with custody and abuse. The book aims to introduce the subject of children's rights to a general educated audience, and provides a thoughtful resource for academics, legal professionals, counseling practitioners, policymakers, lawmakers, and parents.

Anyone (Paperback): Nate Klug Anyone (Paperback)
Nate Klug
R430 Discovery Miles 4 300 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

Milton's God Where 1-95 meets The Pike, a ponderous thunderhead flowered - stewed a minute, then flipped like a flash card, tattered edges crinkling in, linings so dark with excessive bright that, standing, waiting, at the overpass edge, the onlooker couldn't decide until the end, or even then, what was revealed and what had been hidden. Using a variety of forms and achieving a range of musical effects, Nate Klug's Anyone traces the unraveling of astonishment upon small scenes-natural and domestic, political and religious - across America's East and Midwest. The book's title foregrounds the anonymity it seeks through several means: first, through close observation (a concrete saw, a goshawk, a bicyclist); and, second, via translation (satires from Horace and Catullus, and excerpts from Virgil's Aeneid). Unique among contemporary poetry volumes, Anyone demonstrates fluency in the paradoxes of a religious existence: "To stand sometime / outside my faith...or keep waiting / to be claimed in it. "Engaged with theology and the classics but never abstruse, all the while the poems remain grounded in the phenomenal, physical world of "what it is to feel: / moods, half moods, / swarming, then darting loose."

This two-volume work is a testament to the abiding interest and human fascination with ammonites. We offer a new model to explain the morphogenesis of septa and the shell, we explore their habitats by the content of stable isotopes in their shells, we discuss the origin and later evolution of this important clade, and we deliver hypotheses on its demise. The Ammonoidea produced a great number of species that can be used in biostratigraphy and possibly, this is the macrofossil group, which has been used the most for that purpose. Nevertheless, many aspects of their anatomy, mode of life, development or paleobiogeographic distribution are still poorly known. Themes treated are biostratigraphy, paleoecology, paleoenvironment, paleobiogeography, evolution, phylogeny, and ontogeny. Advances such as an explosion of new information about ammonites, new technologies such as isotopic analysis, tomography and virtual paleontology in general, as well as continuous discovery of new fossil finds have given us the opportunity to present a comprehensive and timely "state of the art" compilation. Moreover, it also points the way for future studies to further enhance our understanding of this endlessly fascinating group of organisms.

Standing Together - American Indian Education as Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (Paperback): Beverly J. Klug Standing Together - American Indian Education as Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (Paperback)
Beverly J. Klug
R883 Discovery Miles 8 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The majority of American Indian students attend public schools in the United States. However, education mandated for American Indian students since the 1800s has been primarily education for assimilation, with the goal of eliminating American Indian cultures and languages. Indeed, extreme measures were taken to ensure Native students would "act white" as a result of their involvement with Western education. Today's educational mandates continue a hegemonic "one-size-fits-all" approach to education. This is in spite of evidence that these approaches have rarely worked for Native students and have been extremely detrimental to Native communities. This book provides information about the importance of teaching American Indian students by bridging home and schools, using students' cultural capital as a springboard for academic success. Culturally Responsive Pedagogy is explored from its earliest beginnings following the 1928 Meriam Report. Successful education of Native students depends on all involved and respect for the voices of American Indians in calling for education that holds high expectations for native students and allows them to be grounded in their cultures and languages.

A Time To Speak Out - On Israel, Zionism And Jewish Identity (Paperback): Barbara Rosenbaum A Time To Speak Out - On Israel, Zionism And Jewish Identity (Paperback)
Barbara Rosenbaum; Lisa Geoffrey, Anne Brian, Jacqueline Lynne, Gillian Appignanesi, …
R286 Discovery Miles 2 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The grave situation in the Middle East threatens the future of both Israelis and Palestinians, as well as the stability of the whole region. In this urgent new book, leading Jewish writers and commentators sweep aside the atmosphere of bigotry and vilification which stymies intelligent discussion at every turn, to deliver a bold and richly nuanced exploration of Israel and Zionism today. "A Time To Speak Out" covers the Holocaust, varieties of Zionism, self-hatred, the multiplicity of Jewish identities, human rights and anti-Zionist traditions. In doing so, it reflects the background and the complexities of the situation, as well as the range of voices, outside and within Israel, which are so rarely articulated in the mainstream media. At once sober and radical, "A Time To Speak Out" reclaims an often hysterical debate for people more interested in morally defensible solutions than empty "victories."

Brian Klug
R1,317 Discovery Miles 13 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book deals with a wide range of moral, social, and political issues, centered on questions of identity, Jewish or otherwise. The books scope extends from anti-Semitism, Zionism, and Palestinian terrorism to the language of race, the status of animals, the rights of the child, and related topics. While the chapters interact and overlap, each is self-contained. Taken together, they develop the title theme: the inner connection between being Jewish and doing justice. The prologue offers a bold, new interpretation of the idea of 'the people of God.' From this point on, bringing argument to life is the author's watchword. Drawing on his training as an academic philosopher, his Jewish education, and personal experience, author Brian Klug tackles thorny problems, combining rigorous analysis with outspokenness. He assists readers to think for themselves about difficult questions and provokes them to do so. The questions and issues discussed include: Is anti-Zionism a form of anti-Semitism? * Who were Herzl's Jewish opponents in the East End? * Are anti-Semitism and anti-Americanism inextricably entangled? * What draws America to Israel and what ties Israel to Auschwitz? * How can the climate of debate about Israel among Jews be improved? * What does it mean to say that Israel has a 'right to exist?' * Whither the Jewish future? * The 'race question' on the UK census form * Arthur Balfour's take on 'the Jewish race' * Ethnicity in America * Black-Jewish relations in Chicago * Popular attitudes in Britain towards the 'ritual' slaughter of animals * The treatment of animals in the abattoir and laboratory.

Although advertising has a history that goes back thousands of years, it is the Americans who have made it into an art form. Advertisements were put on everything from pocket mirrors to memo pads, the sides of barns to the sides of carriages and buses. A history of advertising printed in the 1880s even show an advertisement on a tombstone. With the advent of color lithography in the late 1800s, some of the most beautiful and highly collectible items were created. Tin signs with colorful, strong images, often embossed, were made for stores, and often found their way into homes. Paper advertising in calendars, trade cards, and posters reached new levels of artistry in the latter years of the 19th century. This new book explores advertising in all its media: tin, paper, celluloid, and enamel. In full color it portrays the creativity of its makers, while at the same time bringing to life the styles of the past 120 years. Included are signs, three dimensional designs, smalls, and novelties. With some tin signs bringing in excess of $100,000 (a Campbell Soup sign included in this book), it is clear that this is an active and exciting area for collectors. At the same time, it is a good field for the new collector, who can find many pieces of advertising for under $50. Both ends of the spectrum are nicely covered in this book, and its up-to-date pricing information makes it an even more important book for all collectors.

A Magna Carta for all Humanity - Homing in on Human Rights (Paperback, New Ed): Francesca Klug A Magna Carta for all Humanity - Homing in on Human Rights (Paperback, New Ed)
Francesca Klug
R909 Discovery Miles 9 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Magna Carta, sealed in 1215, has come to stand for the rule of law, curbs on executive power and the freedom to enjoy basic liberties. When the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations in 1948, it was heralded as 'a Magna Carta for all human kind'. Yet in the year in which this medieval Charter's 800th anniversary is widely celebrated, the future of the UK's commitment to international human rights standards is in doubt. Are 'universal values' commendable as a benchmark by which to judge the rest of the world, but unacceptable when applied 'at home'? Francesca Klug takes us on a journey through time, exploring such topics as 'British values,' 'natural rights,' 'enlightenment values' and 'legal rights,' to convey what is both distinctive and challenging about the ethic and practice of universal human rights. It is only through this prism, she argues, that the current debate on human rights protection in the UK can be understood. This book will be of interest to students of British Politics, Law, Human Rights and International Relations.

Lesions of the brain stem and related disorders of autonomous regulation systems have been the "Leitmotiv" of the scientific work in the Neurosurgical Department of the Giessen University under the leadership of the late Professor Hans Werner Pia. Some of the results have already been published in supplement volumes of Acta Neurochirurgica. The first one of these was Vol. 4 with the monograph written by H. W. Pia on "Die Schadigungen des Hirnstammes bei den raumfordernden Prozessen des Gehirns." Vol. 19 deals with central disorders of temperature regulation, written by G. Lausberg, followed by Vol. 20 with R. Lorenz's monograph on the effects of intracranial space-occupying lesions on blood pressure and heart rate. Shortly before his death Hans Werner Pia had asked me to combine and publish in this series of supplement volumes of Acta Neurochirurgica another five papers by his co-workers, also related to brain stem lesions and also to cerebral blood flow and CSF dynamics. The result is this volume which contains work dealing with the CT -findings of cerebral mass displacements and their clinical correlations (Sch6nmayr), with other lesions of the brain stem (Laun), with the blink reflex and acoustic evoked potentials in brain stem lesions (Klug and Csecsei), with blood flow in brain structures during increased ICP (Zierski) and with the description of a mathematical model for analysis and simulation of the haemodynamics of intracranial CSF (Hoffmann).

This illustrated reference takes readers on a revealing tour of a vital, underappreciated piece of our nation's infrastructure. Imagine Washington, D.C., without its clean and effi cient Metro. Or New York City without the Lincoln and Holland tunnels. Or Boston without the Big Dig. This nation without its tunnels would be a quagmire of clogged streets, urban gridlock, massive sewage and water pipes along our sidewalks, and train routes that would take hours longer just to veer around a mountain instead of going straight through it. Unlivable. Tunnels have been built for 200 years to solve some of society's most pressing and dangerous problems. And yet the public rarely understands the complexity of boring through the earth under urban skyscrapers or the danger of burrowing under rivers, lakes, and oceans. This smartly told, beautifully illustrated book, by the construction experts who know the underground world better than anyone, gives tunnels their long-deserved due. This is a story that can only be told by these industry experts who have studied that two-century journey, learned from it, and created the tools and technology needed to improve it. That is what the Underground Construction Association delivers with its beautifully told, richly illustrated book, The History of Tunneling in the United States, which includes a collection of museum-worthy historical photos. The tunneling industry is now big business, and it has a story and a history worth telling.
