Satan is on a quest to bring about the End of Days in this riveting thriller by Jerry Pollock. Satan, long banished from Heaven by God, begins his quest for world domination in the Garden of Eden, where he tempts Eve to eat a fig from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Traveling forward in time, Satan finds himself in present-day America-where the President and his son Cain are his descendants. Standing between Satan and his unholy mission are some unforgettable characters who represent the good in humankind. Abel Slobodkin is a righteous young man, and doesn't realize it, but he has been chosen by God to battle against Satan's evil plans. He will clearly need the help of his future mother-in-law, Dr. Elizabeth Corsini, a brilliant psychiatrist at a Washington, DC, hospital. In the course of treating a mental patient, reporter Esther Hirsch, Elizabeth begins to realize that Esther's recurring nightmare is not just the product of a troubled mind, it is both biblical in nature-and represents a covert operation being carried on by the White House. Elizabeth soon realizes there is a conspiracy in the works, called Code Name Daniel, and people involved are turning up dead. She realizes she is next to be killed unless she, and her sister, FBI agent Daniela Corsini, trade their information on operation Code Name Daniel, for their lives. A showdown takes place after the president wins reelection in 2020, and Cain becomes his powerful chief of staff. God and Satan order Abel and Cain to fight a duel, which takes place against the backdrop of Arlington National Cemetery. In a climax that is both harrowing and uplifting, God returns to make his presence known to Earth by performing miracles incredible to Him, and the hidden meaning of Gog and Magog is revealed.
metaCage investigates the musical practice of John Cage in four essays written by current ORCiM fellows. Three works serve as threads that link the contributions. A CD containing performances by the ORCiM Fellows of these works is included with the volume. The essays embrace both compositional practice, as viewed by musicologically oriented performers Juan Parra Cancino and Mieko Kanno, and Cage's aesthetic framework, explored by practice-based musicologists Magnus Andersson and William Brooks.
Oxbow says: The West Coast Line Project sought to investigate a series of rivers valleys in southern Sweden in advance of a new railway line being built through it. This volume, the second of three reports on the project, addresses the rich Neolithic evidence revealed through excavations in the area. Evidence for Neolithic domestic settlements, cemeteries and graves, megalithic tombs, wetland deposits and special assembly places, are presented ahead of more general synthesis and interpretation of the emergence, organisation and transformation of Neolithic societies from the earliest Funnel Beaker culture to the Battle Axe culture. Magnus Andersson draws the different strands of data together to discover the nature of Neolithic people in southern Sweden, how they were socially organised, and how they interacted with different places and the landscape.
Few national bodies carrying out archaeology ever attempt to synthesise their work which is a shame if this book is in any way typical of this type of approach. Published by the Excavations Department at the Swedish National Heritage Board, this book represents a synthesis of up-to-date research and re-evaluation of studies focusing on the Stone Age in Scania. Beyond its reconstruction of the cultural history of this period, it also addresses many issues concerned with the methodology of contract archaeology and how it differs from university-based research. Covering a long period from the first settlers in Scania c.12,000 BP to the end of the Middle Neolithic c.4300 BP, each chapter is written by a different author(s) and contains lots of photographs, drawings and maps. A well written and well presented study which makes you look forward to the next volume on the Bronze Age.
This book takes a long-term view of environmental policy in Poland, which thus serves as an example to increase our understanding of environmental policy making in general in the former Eastern bloc countries. The perspective adopted also includes the pre-transition period, since the transformation process cannot be understood without reference to the preceding period. The book investigates the driving forces underlying policy changes, both prior to and after the transition, and identifies elements both of change and continuity - topics that have hitherto been neglected in the literature. A change of political system in Poland did not lead to a major change in the thrust of environmental policy: the policy makers adopted a cautious approach to new instruments and institutions during the transition period. What did change with the transition was the implementation aspect: the effectiveness of environmental policy increased dramatically after the abolition of socialism. The rule of law meant that the state administration and the polluters were subordinated to the legal system, thus increasing the power to environmental policy. Readership: Researchers and students interested in the environment and the countries in transition.

Popular presentation of the archaeology and palaeo-ecology in a marginal, forested area of northern Scania, Sweden, where recent research has provided groundbreaking new knowledge. The emphasis is on the Mesolithic and on the Medieval and Post-Medieval periods and on the various aspects of the complementary economies of the forest.
