The psychology of aging is an exciting and rapidly-developing field. This volume provides a collection of classic, original and often widely-cited papers, including some older papers which may be hard to find through conventional searches. Taken together, they help to address some key questions: what are the cognitive changes related to aging? Is mental exercise useful? To what extent might intelligence, education or stimulating mental activities delay or even reduce cognitive symptoms of dementia? However, the book goes well beyond cognition and addresses social and emotional changes in aging, as well as looking at how lifestyle factors may be influential in psychological functioning. The section on the psychology of dementia covers the evolving psychological models, plus innovative types of psychological interventions. As more people live to an age where they are dependent on others, the book also considers the stresses on carers and how carers can be supported. Lastly, other aspects of mental health problems in old-age are addressed, including depression, PTSD and personality disorder. This collection of intriguing and inspiring papers will liven up the shelves of students, researchers and academics in the field as well as being a very useful resource for research, teaching and study.

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) has made a huge global, clinical impact since its inception, and this landmark book is the first to draw all the published research together in one place. Edited by experts in the intervention, including members of the workgroup who initially developed the therapy, Cognitive Stimulation Therapy for Dementia features contributions from authors across the globe, providing a broad overview of the entire research programme. The book demonstrates how CST can significantly improve cognition and quality of life for people with dementia, and offers insight on the theory and mechanisms of change, as well as discussion of the practical implementation of CST in a range of clinical settings. Drawing from several research studies, the book also includes a section on culturally adapting and translating CST, with case studies from countries such as Japan, New Zealand and Sub-Saharan Africa. Cognitive Stimulation Therapy for Dementia will be essential reading for academics, researchers and postgraduate students involved in the study of dementia, gerontology and cognitive rehabilitation. It will also be of interest to health professionals, including psychologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, nurses and social workers.

CANE: Camberwell Assessment of Need for the Elderly is a tool for assessing the needs of older people and particularly those with mental health problems. It is based on the Camberwell Assessment of Need, a widely used needs assessment for people with severe mental illness. Needs are assessed in 24 areas of life and cover a broad range of health, social and psychological domains. Also included are two items that assess the needs of those who care for the older person. The CANE is a comprehensive assessment instrument, suitable for both research and clinical use. This book contains chapters on its development, and its application in various settings and populations, such as day hospitals, sheltered housing, primary care, acute hospital wards, services for early-onset dementia, and long-term care settings. There are also chapters on its use in Spain and Germany. Both the full version CANE and short version (CANE-S) are included in photocopiable format, along with a detailed manual, a full training programme and scoring guidance. The CANE has been rigorously developed by a multi-disciplinary team at University College London in collaboration with other academic centres, and is suitable for use in all settings involving older persons.
