This book discusses the state-of-the-art and open problems in computational finance. Special attention is devoted to a uniform methodology for both testing the latest achievements and simultaneously educating young PhD students. Most of the mathematical codes are linked into a novel computational finance toolbox, which is provided in MATLAB and PYTHON with an open access license. The book offers a valuable guide for researchers in computational finance and related areas, e.g. energy markets, with an interest in industrial mathematics.

Die Studie stellt dabei die musikwissenschaftliche Debatte in ihrer historischen Gesamtheit dar, also von den ersten Auff hrungen des Ring bis in die Gegenwart. Die Studie untersucht die Diskussion hinsichtlich ihres Wesens und ihrer Psyche und zeigt, wie sich einzelne Argumentationslinien im Lauf der Zeit ver ndert und pr zisiert haben.

Dabei geht es nicht um die Frage, ob Wagner Antisemit war, denn dies lasst sich anhand seiner Schriften eindeutig belegen. Vielmehr wird die Diskussion von der Frage bestimmt, ob antisemitische Tendenzen auch den musikalischen Werken Wagners innewohnen. Spatestens seit Adornos "Versuch uber Wagner" ist diese schwierige Frage kontrovers diskutiert worden. Die pseudowissenschaftliche Argumentation in Wagners Schriften, Andeutungen von prominenten Denkern wie Gustav Mahler, Alfred Einstein oder eben Theodor W. Adorno und nicht zuletzt die Vergotterung Wagners und seiner Musik durch Adolf Hitler gaben das Brennmaterial, an dem sich die Diskussion in den 70er Jahren - nach einer Zeit, in der man mit werkimmanenter Deutung eine Klarung zu verdrangen suchte - mit voller Wucht entzunden sollte. Die vorliegende Untersuchung hat das Ziel, die Diskussion uber antisemitische Zerrbilder im "Ring des Nibelungen" kritisch zu beleuchten. Eine Diskussion, die sich als sehr emotional und kontrovers herausstellt, auch weil, wie viele Wagner-Verteidiger immer wieder betonen, Wagner seine Buhnenfiguren nie offen als judisch oder gar als Judenkarikaturen herausgestellt hat. Die Studie stellt dabei die musikwissenschaftliche Debatte in ihrer historischen Gesamtheit dar, also von den ersten Auffuhrungen des Ring bis in die Gegenwart. Die Studie untersucht die Diskussion hinsichtlich ihres Wesens und ihrer Psyche und zeigt, wie sich einzelne Argumentationslinien im Lauf der Zeit verandert und prazisiert haben.

Die Studienzeiten sind im internationalen Vergleich mit sechs Jahren uberdurchschnittlich lang (OECD-Durchschnitt: 4,8 Jahre, Frankreich 5,5, Niederlande 3,9 Jahre) und die Abbrecherquoten mit rund 30 % recht hoch. Zudem nimmt in Deutschland ein nur vergleichsweise geringer Anteil eines Altersjahrgangs (32 %) ein Studium auf (OECD-Durchschnitt 47 %). Insgesamt betrachtet, wird dem deutschen Hochschulsystem ein Problem sowohl in der Masse als auch in der Klasse der Absolventen attestiert. Eine Reihe von Industrielandern scheint dagegen bessere Erfolge bei der Universitatsausbildung zu erzielen. Es stellt sich daher die Frage, ob und was man von diesen Landern lernen kann. Denn gerade fur ein rohstoffarmes Land wie die Bundesrepublik Deutschland gewinnt die Ausbildung junger Menschen zunehmend an Bedeutung, nicht zuletzt vor dem Hintergrund des Wandels von der Industrie zur wissensbasierten Dienstleistungsgesellschaft und der anstehenden demographischen Entwicklung. Es ist unabdingbar, dass jeder - unabhangig von seinem sozialen Umfeld - eine seiner Leistungsfahigkeit und seinen Neigungen entsprechende Ausbildung geniessen kann. Soziale Barrieren im Bildungssystem sind nicht nur aus gesellschaftspolitischer Sicht bedenklich sondern ebenso eine Verschwendung von Humanressourcen. Im Folgenden soll mit der Studienfinanzierung ein spezieller Aspekt des Hochschulwesens beleuchtet werden

rd This book presents a collection of selected contributions presented at the 3 International Workshop on Scientific Computing in Electrical Engineering, SCEE-2000, which took place in Warnemiinde, Germany, from August 20 to 23, 2000. Nearly hundred scientists and engineers from thirteen countries gathered in Warnemiinde to participate in the conference. Rostock Univer sity, the oldest university in Northern Europe founded in 1419, hosted the conference. This workshop followed two earlier workshops held 1997 at the Darmstadt University of Technology and 1998 at Weierstrass Institute for Applied Anal ysis and Stochastics in Berlin under the auspices ofthe German Mathematical Society. These workshops aimed at bringing together two scientific communi ties: applied mathematicians and electrical engineers who do research in the field of scientific computing in electrical engineering. This, of course, is a wide field, which is why it was decided to concentrate on selected major topics. The workshop in Darmstadt, which was organized by Michael Giinther from the Mathematics Department and Ursula van Rienen from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology,brought together more than hundred scientists interested in numerical methods for the simulation of circuits and electromagnetic fields. This was a great success. Voices coming from the participants suggested that it was time to bring these communities together in order to get to know each other, to discuss mutual interests and to start cooperative work. A collection of selected contributions appeared in 'Surveys on Mathematics for Industry', Vol.8, No. 3-4 and Vol.9, No.2, 1999.

The book includes the papers presented at the conference discussing approaches to prevent or reliably control knocking and other irregular combustion events. The majority of today's highly efficient gasoline engines utilize downsizing. High mean pressures produce increased knocking, which frequently results in a reduction in the compression ratio at high specific powers. Beyond this, the phenomenon of pre-ignition has been linked to the rise in specific power in gasoline engines for many years. Charge-diluted concepts with high compression cause extreme knocking, potentially leading to catastrophic failure. The introduction of RDE legislation this year will further grow the requirements for combustion process development, as residual gas scavenging and enrichment to improve the knock limit will be legally restricted despite no relaxation of the need to reach the main center of heat release as early as possible. New solutions in thermodynamics and control engineering are urgently needed to further increase the efficiency of gasoline engines.
