The greatest threat we face is not robots replacing us, but our reluctance to reinvent ourselves. We live in an age of wonder: cars that drive themselves, devices that anticipate our needs, and robots capable of everything from advanced manufacturing to complex surgery. Automation, algorithms, and AI will transform every facet of daily life, but are we prepared for what that means for the future of work, leadership, and creativity? While many already fear that robots will take their jobs, rapid advancements in machine intelligence raise a far more important question: what is the true potential of human intelligence in the twenty-first century? Futurist and global nomad Mike Walsh has synthesized years of research and interviews with some of the world's top business leaders, AI pioneers and data scientists into a set of 10 principles about what it takes to succeed in the algorithmic age. Across disparate cultures, industries, and timescales, Walsh brings to life the history and future of ideas like probabilistic thinking, machine learning, digital ethics, disruptive innovation, and de-centralized organizations as a foundation for a radically new approach to making decisions, solving problems, and leading people. The Algorithmic Leader offers a hopeful and practical guide for leaders of all types, and organizations of all sizes, to survive and thrive in this era of unprecedented change. By applying Walsh's 10 core principles, readers will be able to design their own journey of personal transformation, harness the power of algorithms, and chart a clear path ahead-for their company, their team, and themselves.
Michael J Walsh, Mike to most of his friends and colleagues, is a professor in the School of Animation, Arts & Design at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario. Besides his extensive college career, he has been involved in Canadian book publishing for over 40 years, performing a variety of roles from publisher, editor, sales and marketing director and international rights negotiator. He was a delegate to the first government conference on Multiculturalism in Ottawa held in the early 1970s. He attended the first discussion group in Banff that recommended the establishment of an Association of Canadian Studies world-wide. He was also an early member of the original Commit-tee for an Independent Canada. He has worked with many distinguished writers over the years including Irving Layton, Gwendolyn MacEwen, Joy Kogawa, Seymour Mayne, Len Gasparini and David Watmough. He has also guided many students at Sheridan for 35 years, who later became internationally established artists in animation, illustration, graphic design, photography, fashion design and media. Now, as he reaches the twilight of his teaching career, he hopes that the readers of Singing in the Mist will appreciate the passion, curiosity, imagination and the honest reflections of his inner self that underlie his words.
Nicholas van Hoogstraten is a super-rich business man whose ruthless exploits have kept his name in the headlines for 30 years. Most recently, he was found guilty of the manslaughter of business associate Mohammed Sabir Raja, who was stabbed five times and shot at point-blank range by hitmen sent by Hoogstraten. This was the culmination of a career of wreaking vengeance on anyone who dared get in his way. In building a vast fortune, he secretly linked up with one of the most frightening gangsters in Britain, with a vicious regime in Africa and, according to some, collusions with the Mafia. He employed thugs to bomb the home of a man who owed him money. He sent a gang to terrorise an old people's home. He was suspected of involvement in an arson attack which killed five party-goers. He threatened friends and rivals - even judges - with death. This book reveals the real Van Hoogstraten: his life, his women, his riches and what exactly has made one man so feared.
