Earning him an Oscar nomination, Willem Dafoe is mesmerising as Vincent van Gogh in At Eternity’s Gate. Covering his time in Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise, we find a complex, troubled soul who is seeking a new visual language, while also struggling to make sense of himself and his connection to those around him, including Paul Gaugain and a confiding priest.

Shot with a painter’s eye, director Julian Schnabel once again shows his talent for working with complex biography and the lives of artists as he did before in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and Basquiat.

Inside Llewyn Davis, the new film from Academy Award winners Joel and Ethan Coen, follows a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961.

Llewyn Davis is at a crossroads. Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling to make it as a musician against seemingly insurmountable obstacles - some of them of his own making. Living at the mercy of both friends and strangers, scaring up what work he can find, Llewyn's misadventures take him from the baskethouses of the Village to an empty Chicago club - on an odyssey to audition for a music mogul - and back again.

Brimming with music performed by Oscar Isaac, Justin Timberlake and Carey Mulligan (as Llewyn's married Village friends), as well as Marcus Mumford and Punch Brothers, Inside Llewyn Davis - in the tradition of O Brother, Where Art Thou? - is infused with the transportive sound of another time and place.

However, she also learns of the sacrifices Wallis was prepared to make for the man she loved, which gives her renewed strength to choose her own destiny. In the midst of a relentless New York winter, with no job, no money and nowhere to stay, down-on-his-luck musician Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) spends his days flicking through his address book trying to find a bed, or a floor, for the night. If things weren't bad enough, his musical partner has ended it all by jumping off of a bridge, and his lover Jean (Carey Mulligan), who just happens to be the wife of his best friend Jim (Justin Timberlake), has told him that she's pregnant and wants an abortion. In a last ditch bid to shed his hand-to-mouth existence, Davis, with his ever-present pet cat in tow, sets out on a road trip to Chicago in the hope of resurrecting his music career by impressing local promoter Bud Grossman (F. Murray Abraham).
