Rise of the New Oil Order - The Facts Behind the New Massive Supplies, the Exciting New Technologies and the Emerging Oil... Rise of the New Oil Order - The Facts Behind the New Massive Supplies, the Exciting New Technologies and the Emerging Oil Powers of the XXIst Century (Paperback)
Paul Michael Wihbey
R589 Discovery Miles 5 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Rise of the New Oil Order demonstrates that there are vast reserves of oil to meet an increasing demand. Oil will remain the world's primary strategic resource and an invaluable commodity. But oil will come from different sources (mainly North America), will be of a different kind (unconventional), and will be produced with different technologies by different types of companies. The oil market will not be regulated by OPEC but by the consumers and producers together, who will create the mechanisms to achieve price stability at a higher level. In this new context, the book examines the strategies of the traditional players the US, Russia, Japan, the European Union, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Mexico and of the new ones Alberta, Saskatchewan, China, India, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Nigeria and West Africa. The book offers a very different explanation of the recent rise of the price of oil. The increase of' demand in China and India is not the key factor. Other rational and irrational factors may explain the speculation and market manipulation that occurred, especially in 2007-2008. The Rise of the New Oil Order is a manifesto and a practical roadmap with specific proposals to restore a healthy market equilibrium to this most critical of commodities. It is a book that brings transparency to consumers and investors, companies, banks, and governments, while casting aside irrational beliefs and simplistic explanations. The book is based on a seven-hour interview session with two of Switzerland's most knowledgeable business reporters.

Colonial and Post-Colonial Goan Literature in Portuguese - Woven Palms (Paperback): Paul Michael Melo e Castro Colonial and Post-Colonial Goan Literature in Portuguese - Woven Palms (Paperback)
Paul Michael Melo e Castro
R1,339 Discovery Miles 13 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection of essays brings together established scholars of Lusophone Goan literature from India, Brazil, Portugal and Great Britain. For the first time in English, this volume traces the key narrative works, authors and themes of this small but significant territory. Goa, a Portuguese colony between 1510 and 1961, was the site of a particular and particularly intense meeting of West and East. The problematic yet productive encounter between Europe and India that has characterised Goa's history is a major theme in its literature, which affords important insights and material for post-colonial thought. Goan literature in Portuguese is the only significant Indian literature to have been written in a European language other than English and, as such, provides both a challenging point of comparison with anglophone Indian literature and a space to examine post-colonial theory often implicitly embedded in a British Indian colonial experience.

A collection of children's animated adventures from the Blue Sky studios. In 'Epic' (2013), Mary Katherine (voice of Amanda Seyfried) lives in a cabin in the woods with her eccentric father, Professor Bomba (Jason Sudeikis), who studies the local fauna. One day, when he doesn't return from a hike in the forest, she sets out to find him, inadvertently stumbling across some strange glowing leaves. Clutching one, Mary Katherine is shrunken down to the forest floor, where, after meeting up with a group of warriors known as the Leafmen, she finds herself helping her new friends in their war to save their world from the clutches of the evil Boggans. In 'Horton Hears a Who!' (2008), a jungle elephant named Horton (Jim Carrey) discovers a race of tiny beings living in a solitary dandelion. Recognising the dangers they face, the friendly pachyderm resolves to keep his microscopic pals safe. However, as Horton is the only one who hears the inhabitants of 'Whoville', his other animal pals are convinced he's gone crazy and resolve to do something about it. Horton and his miniscule friends must struggle against these impossible odds to prevent disaster. In 'Ice Age' (2002), a group of three animals embark upon an epic journey at the dawn of the great ice age. Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo), Manfred the woolly mammoth (Ray Romano), and Diego the sabre-toothed tiger (Denis Leary) team up to help return a human baby to its father, and must risk life and limb as they traverse boiling lava pits and travel through dangerous ice caves to complete their mission. In 'Ice Age 2: The Meltdown' (2006), Manny is ready to start a family, but nobody has seen another mammoth for a long time; in fact, Manny thinks he may be the last one. That is until he miraculously finds Ellie (Queen Latifah), the only female mammoth left in the world. The only problem is, they can't stand each other... In 'Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs' (2009), Scrat the squirrel (Chris Wedge) is still trying to get his paws on that ever-elusive nut, Manny and Ellie anxiously await the birth of their mini-mammoth, and Diego wonders if he's growing too laid-back living the life of a pampered house cat. Meanwhile, Sid the sloth gets into trouble when he creates his own makeshift family by hijacking some unusually large eggs, and inadvertently discovers a mysterious underground world where dinosaurs still roam. In 'Ice Age 4: Continental Drift' (2012), when the entire continent is set adrift following a global cataclysm, Manny, Diego and Sid find themselves separated from the rest of the herd. Commandeering a nearby iceberg as a makeshift boat, they take to the high seas. Fearsome sea creatures and battlethirsty pirates are among the challenges faced by the intrepid trio as they ride the waves of the world in search of their family. In 'Rio' (2011), Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) is a rare macaw living in a bookshop in small-town Minnesota. Believing himself to be the last of his kind, he is thrilled to hear that a female macaw of the same species has been spotted in South America. Blu must now overcome his social ineptitude and fear of flying and set out for Rio de Janeiro to track down the feisty and independent Jewel (Anne Hathaway) and try to win her heart. Finally, in 'Robots' (2005), Rodney Copperbottom (Ewan McGregor) is a small town robot who has a gift for inventing things and a hope of moving beyond his quaint surroundings. Dreaming of doing something better than working alongside his dad in a restaurant, Rodney, armed with his unique talent for inventing, embarks on a journey to Robot City to meet his idol, the majestic inventor Bigweld (Mel Brooks).

Transforming Children's Services - Social Work, Neoliberalism and the Modern World (Paperback, Ed): Paul Michael Garrett Transforming Children's Services - Social Work, Neoliberalism and the Modern World (Paperback, Ed)
Paul Michael Garrett
R779 Discovery Miles 7 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

""This is a forensic dissection of New Labour's approach to transforming children's services. Garrett brings together politics, policy and plans in a resolutely critical engagement with the futures currently being made both for social workers and for the families and children who may need those services."
John Clarke, Professor of Social Policy, The Open University"

""Paul Michael Garrett writes with verve, commitment and clarity. His new book on transforming Children's Services will make a significant and lasting impression on the social work literature."
Stephen Webb, Director of Institute of the Advanced Study for Humanity (IASH) University of Newcastle, Australia"

""This is an excellent book and one of the best I have read for some time. It is a must have for all social work and social policy students and practitioners. Policy makers and managers should also read and digest this, even though they will probably find large parts an uncomfortable read."
Steve Rogowski, Professional Social Work (Dec, 2009)"

""Paul Michael Garrett's designedly critical analysis is timely, offering a fast-paced, hard-hitting, thought-provoking critique ... this book is sure to satisfy those looking for less of 'surface' and more 'depth' explorations ... I am sure that 'Transforming' Children's Services? will become essential reading for social work and social policy students throughout the UK and, indeed, internationally given that Canada, America, Australia and New Zealand share in cognate systems of child welfare and protection."
Karen Broadhurst, Critical Social Policy (forthcoming, 2010)"

This book provides an accessible overview of the 'transformation' of Children's Services in England. In doing this, it draws on social theory, critical social policy and takes account of developments in other countries.

Paul Michael Garrett argues that the many changes which have taken place within, and beyond, Children's Services are related to the politics of Neoliberalism which, it is maintained, lie at the core of the "Change for Children" programme.

Readers will find detailed discussion on: The Laming Report which examined the death of Victoria Climbie The case of 'Baby P' Social work's 'electronic turn' and the use of ICTs in Children's Services Controversial plans to introduce "Contactpoint" (a database on all children) More pervasive patterns of surveillance How 'ASBO politics' has influenced the 'transformation' agenda So-called 'Problem Families' and the measures put in place to respond to such families Controversial plans to set up 'Social Work Practices' for children in public care "Transforming Children's Services" will be a vital text for social work and social policy students. Furthermore, the book directly addresses a range of issues of direct concern to practitioners.

The book will also find an audience amongst academics, policy makers and all those who are interested in critical reflection and in applying theoretical insights to practice issues. After each chapter a 'Reflection and Talk' box is included to prompt further discussion on the key themes examined.

Transatlantic German Studies - Testimonies to the Profession (Hardcover): Paul Michael Lutzeler, Peter Hoeyng Transatlantic German Studies - Testimonies to the Profession (Hardcover)
Paul Michael Lutzeler, Peter Hoeyng
R1,810 Discovery Miles 18 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The decisive contribution of the exile generation of the 1930s and '40s to German Studies in the United States is well known. The present volume carries the story forward to the next generation(s), giving voice to scholars from the US and overseas, many of them mentored by the exile generation. The exiles knew vividly the value of the Humanities; the following generations, though spared the experience of historical catastrophe, have found formidable challenges in building and maintaining the field in a time increasingly dismissive of that value. The scholar-contributors to this volume, prominent members of the profession, share their experiences of finding their way in the field and helping to develop it to its present state as well as their thoughts on its present challenges, including the question of the role of literature and of interdisciplinarity, pluralism, and diversity. Of particular interest is the role of transatlantic dialogue. Contributors: Leslie A. Adelson, Hans Adler, Russell A. Berman, Jane K. Brown, Walter Hinderer, Robert C. Holub, Leroy Hopkins, Andreas Huyssen, Claire Kramsch, Wilhelm Krull, Paul Michael Lutzeler, Mark W. Roche, Judith Ryan, Azade Seyhan, Lynne Tatlock, Liliane Weissberg. Paul Michael Lutzeler is Rosa May Distinguished University Professor in the Humanities at Washington University, St. Louis. Peter Hoeyng is Associate Professor of German at Emory University.
