'Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic Socialism as I understand it'. Thus wrote Orwell following his experiences as a militiaman in the Spanish Civil War, chronicled in Homage to Catalonia. Here he brings to bear all the force of his humanity, passion and clarity, describing with bitter intensity the bright hopes and cynical betrayals of that chaotic episode.

But he slides instead into a self-induced poverty that destroys his creativity and his spirit. Only Rosemary, ever-faithful Rosemary, has the strength to challenge his commitment to his chosen way of life. Through the character of Gordon Comstock, Orwell reveals his own disaffection with the society he once himself renounced.

George Orwell was an inveterate keeper of diaries. The Orwell Diaries presents eleven of them, covering the period 1931-1949, and follows Orwell from his early years as a writer to his last literary notebook. An entry from 1931 tells of a communal shave in the Trafalgar Square fountains, while notes from his travels through industrial England show the development of the impassioned social commentator. This same acute power of observation is evident in his diaries from Morocco, as well as at home, where his domestic diaries chart the progress of his garden and animals with a keen eye; the wartime diaries, from descriptions of events overseas to the daily violence closer to home, describe astutely his perspective on the politics of both, and provide a new and entirely refreshing insight into Orwell's character and his great works.

Much anticipated by fans of Doctor Who both old and new, Big Finish are delighted to welcome Alex Kingston back again to reprise her River Song character first seen in 2008 on TV. Aside from her iconic turn in Doctor Who, Alex Kingston's well known in both the UK and US for her regular roles in E.R., Arrow, Upstairs Downstairs, and The Knock. In series three, River seeks to save the fifth incarnation of her husband the Doctor (Peter Davison) from Madame Kovarian (Frances Barber) - who just because she's killed him once, doesn't mean to stop trying. 3.1 - The Lady in the Lake by Nev Fountain. On Terminus Prime, clients choose their own means of demise. Something exciting, meaningful, or heroic to end it all. But when River discovers that there are repeat customers, she knows something more is going on. She begins to uncover a cult with worrying abilities. Its members can apparently cheat death, and that's not all they have in common with River. 3.2 - A Requiem for the Doctor by Jac Rayner. River has joined the Doctor and his friend Brooke on their travels, and they stop off in 18th century Vienna. Brooke thinks history is dull. Until people start dying. Mozart's legacy is not just his music. River has more than one mystery to solve before a killer is let loose on the people of Vienna - and on the Doctor. 3.3 - My Dinner with Andrew by John Dorney. Welcome, Mesdames et Messieurs, to The Bumptious Gastropod. The most exclusive, most discreet dining experience outside the universe. For the restaurant exists beyond spacetime itself, and the usual rules of causality do not apply. Anything could happen. It is here that the Doctor has a date. With River Song. And with death. 3.4 - The Furies by Matt Fitton. Stories of the Furies abound across the cosmos: vengeful spirits hounding guilty souls to death. Madame Kovarian taught them to a child raised in fear, trained to kill, and placed inside a spacesuit. Kovarian knows the universe's greatest threat, the Doctor must be eliminated. An assassin was created for that purpose. But if Melody Pond has failed, Kovarian will simply have to try again. The sci-fi series dips its toe into Agatha Christie waters when the Doctor (Peter Davison) arrives in 1920s England and becomes embroiled in a murder mystery. When the TARDIS arrives at Cranleigh Halt railway station on a summer afternoon in 1925, the Doctor and his pals are surprised to be met by a chauffeur (Timothy Block) and whisked off to a cricket match. Lord Cranleigh (Michael Cochrane) has assumed that the Doctor has come from Guy's Hospital for the charity event to be held later that night in aid of a sick kids' hospital. There then follows a masked ball, a case of mistaken identity and mysterious, murderous goings on in this two-part homage to the golden age of English whodunnits.

With such varied correspondents as T. S. Eliot, Stephen Spender and Anthony Powell, for nearly forty years George Orwell wrote and received the letters that are now collected together in A Life in Letters, edited with an introduction by Peter Davison in Penguin Modern Classics. Personal as well as political, Orwell's letters offer a fascinating window into the mind of a phenomenal man. We are privy to snatched glimpses of his family life: his son Richard's developing teeth, the death of his wife Eileen, and his own illness. Candid portraits of Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War, his opinions on bayonets, and on the chaining of German prisoners display his magnificent talent as a political writer, and letters to friends and his publisher provide a unique insight into the development and publication of some of the most important novels in the English language. A Life in Letters features previously unpublished material, including letters which shed new light on a love that would haunt him for his whole life, as well as revealing the inspiration for some of his most famous characters. Presented for the first time in a dedicated volume, this selection of Orwell's letters is an indispensible companion to his diaries. 'Arguably the most influential writer thrown up by the West in the twentieth century ... the real Orwell - whoever he is - continues to take shape' The Times

Peter Davison, Janet Fielding and Sarah Sutton reprise their roles as The Doctor, Tegan and Nyssa, in a run of stories following on from 1983's adventure The Arc of Infinity: "They say there'll be thousands pouring into Manchester tomorrow. From all over the county, north and south. It'll be a piece of history. People will remember this!" Lost in the smog of the Industrial Revolution, the TARDIS crashes four miles south of Manchester, in the grounds of Hurley Hall - a grand mansion belonging to a local factory owner, a proudly self-made man. But while Hurley dreams of growing richer still on the wealth of secret knowledge locked up in the Doctor's time and space machine, his servants hope only for a fair day's pay for a fair day's work. His young maid Cathy, for instance, whom Nyssa learns is looking forward to joining the working people's march to St Peter's Field, in the heart of the city. There'll be speeches and banners and music. It'll be like one big jamboree...Or so she thinks. For the city's establishment have called in their own private militia, to control the crowd. One of the darkest days in Manchester's history is about to unfold - and the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan are right in the thick of it. Forever kept busy, Peter Davison's most recently been seen on the London stage in the critically acclaimed The Vertical Hour, and in the musical Gypsy opposite Imelda Staunton. The Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan team first met in 1981's Doctor Who adventure Logopolis, where Tegan and Nyssa were on hand to help the Doctor (Tom Baker) regenerate into his fifth incarnation (Peter Davison). One of Big Finish's last outings with The Fifth Doctor, Tegan and Nyssa was in Doctor Who - The Fifth Doctor Boxed Set, one story from which (Iterations of I) won the Scribe Award at the 2015 San Diego Comic Con.
