Colorful, mysterious, and often fantastically shaped, fungi have
been a source of wonder and fascination since the earliest
hunter-gatherers first foraged for them. Today there are few, if
any, places on Earth where fungi have not found themselves a home.
And these highly specialized organisms are an indispensable part of
the great chain of life. They not only partner in symbiotic
relationships with over ninety percent of the world's trees and
flowering plant species, they also recycle and create humus, the
fertile soil from which such flora receive their nutrition. Some
fungi are parasites or saprotrophs; many are poisonous and, yes,
hallucinogenic; others possess life-enhancing properties that can
be tapped for pharmaceutical products; while a delicious few are
prized by epicureans and gourmands worldwide.
In recent decades, a growing body of educational scholarship has called into question deeply embedded assumptions about the nature, value and consequences of reason. Education and the Limits of Reason extends this critical conversation, arguing that in seeking to investigate the meaning and significance of reason in human lives, sources other than non-fiction educational or philosophical texts can be helpful. Drawing on the work of Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Nabokov, the authors demonstrate that literature can allow us to see how reason is understood and expressed, contested and compromised - by distinctive individuals, under particular circumstances, in complex and varied relations with others. Novels, plays and short stories can take us into the workings of a rational or irrational mind and show how the inner world of cognitive activity is shaped by external events. Perhaps most importantly, literature can prompt us to ask searching questions of ourselves; it can unsettle and disturb, and in so doing can make an important contribution to our educational formation. An original and thought provoking work, Education and the Limits of Reason offers a fresh perspective on classic texts by Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Nabokov, and encourages readers to reconsider conventional views of teaching and learning. This book will appeal to a wide range of academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of education, literature and philosophy.

This third edition of the leading work on joint operating agreements (JOAs) provides a pragmatic examination of the provisions of a typical JOA in the order that they appear, with a particular focus on the critical issues of scope, the operator's role, joint and exclusive operations, default, transfers and decommissioning. There is also practical analysis of the key issues which apply to the operation of any JOA and the positions which are taken in the various leading industry model form contracts. The perspectives of the operator and non-operator are addressed, along with a consideration of the domestic and international standards which will apply to a petroleum project. The third edition highlights changes in the JOA world since the second edition and includes three new chapters (with increased focus on incorporated joint venture structures, contracting and forfeiture of interests) and four new appendices (addressing model form JOAs, joint study and bid agreements, the collateralisation of JOAs and the content of JOAs for unconventional petroleum developments). Author Peter Roberts is the managing partner of the London office of leading US oil and gas law firm Andrews Kurth LLP. He is also the general editor of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators' Journal of World Energy Law & Business. Joint Operating Agreements, 3rd Ed: A Practical Guide is an essential addition to the library of any lawyers, commercial managers, advisers, engineers or financiers who are engaged in the development of petroleum exploration and production projects worldwide.
