Differential Forms in Algebraic Topology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1982): Raoul Bott, Loring W. Tu Differential Forms in Algebraic Topology (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1982)

R1,520 Discovery Miles 15 200 Shipped within 7 - 11 working days

Developed from a first-year graduate course in algebraic topology, this text is an informal introduction to some of the main ideas of contemporary homotopy and cohomology theory. The materials are structured around four core areas: de Rham theory, the Cech-de Rham complex, spectral sequences, and characteristic classes. By using the de Rham theory of differential forms as a prototype of cohomology, the machineries of algebraic topology are made easier to assimilate. With its stress on concreteness, motivation, and readability, this book is equally suitable for self-study and as a one-semester course in topology.

Lie groups and their representations occupy an important place in mathematics with applications in such diverse fields as differential geometry, number theory, differential equations and physics. In 1977 a symposium was held in Oxford to introduce this rapidly developing and expanding subject to non-specialists. This volume contains the lectures of ten distinguished mathematicians designed to provide the reader with a deeper understanding of the fundamental theory and appreciate the range of results. This volume contains much to interest mathematicians and theoretical physicists from advanced undergraduate level upwards.

Selected Papers (Paperback, 1st ed. 1981, Reprint 2015 of the 1981 edition): Marston Morse Selected Papers (Paperback, 1st ed. 1981, Reprint 2015 of the 1981 edition)

From the Introduction: " Marston Morse was born in 1892, so that he was 33 years old when in 1925 his paper Relations between the critical points of a real-valued function of n independent variables appeared in the Transactions of the American Mathematical Society. Thus Morse grew to maturity just at the time when the subject of Analysis Situs was being shaped by such masters as Poincare, Veblen, L. E. J. Brouwer, G. D. Birkhoff, Lefschetz and Alexander, and it was Morse's genius and destiny to discover one of the most beautiful and far-reaching relations between this fledgling and Analysis; a relation which is now known as Morse Theory. In retrospect all great ideas take on a certain simplicity and inevitability, partly because they shape the whole subsequent development of the subject. And so to us, today, Morse Theory seems natural and inevitable. This whole flight of ideas was of course acclaimed by the mathematical World...it eventually earned him practically every honor of the mathematical community, over twenty honorary degrees, the National Science Medal, the Legion of Honor of France, ..."

This volume attests to the vitality of differential geometry as it probes deeper into its internal structure and explores ever widening connections with other subjects in mathematics and physics. To most of us Professor S. S. Chern is modern differential geometry, and we, his students, are grateful to him for leading us to this fertile landscape. The aims of the symposium were to review recent developments in geometry and to expose and explore new areas of research. It was our way of honoring Professor Chern upon the occasion of his official retirement as Professor of Mathematics at the University of California. This book is a record of the scientific events of the symposium and reflects Professor Chern's wide interest and influence. The conference also reflected Professor Chern's personality. It was a serious occasion, active yet relaxed, mixed with gentleness and good humor. We wish him good health, a long life, happiness, and a continuation of his extraordinarily deep and original contributions to mathematics. I. M.
