Supernatural drama, based on the novel by Susan Hill, in which a young lawyer finds himself battling to contain the ghost of a dead woman bent on destruction. When Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) leaves his son (Misha Handley) behind in London to head on an assignment to a remote village, little does he imagine what lies in store for him. Arthur discovers that the locals live in such fear of a mysterious figure known as the 'Woman in Black' (Liz White) that they keep their children locked away indoors, afraid that contact with the woman would harm them. Arthur's investigations lead him to believe that the woman is a ghost, haunted by her inability to save her son from drowning. When she turns her attention towards Arthur's own son, the lawyer is forced to confront the spectre head on.

Terrorism - A Critical Introduction (Paperback): Richard Jackson, Lee Jarvis, Jeroen Gunning, Marie Breen Smyth Terrorism - A Critical Introduction (Paperback)
Richard Jackson, Lee Jarvis, Jeroen Gunning, Marie Breen Smyth
R899 Discovery Miles 8 990 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

This innovative text provides a much-needed critical introduction to terrorism. Cutting-edge research on contemporary issues is combined with new insights into long-debated issues such as the definition of terrorism, the nature of the terrorist threat and counter-terrorism strategies. Showing that the methods we adopt as well as the material we study are vital for a clear understanding of the subject, this text goes beyond traditional IR approaches to rethink popular beliefs and assumptions about terrorism. Taking a genuinely global and integrated approach, this book is an ideal entry into the study of terrorism. In the years since 9/11, terrorism has been transformed into an issue of global significance. Terrorism and the war on terror has affected virtually every aspect of modern life, and a precise understanding of terrorism is now more important - and contentious - than ever. This text examines the origins, perceptions of, and responses to, terrorism and counter-terrorism in the contemporary world. It takes into account recent developments on the world stage as well as within - and in response to - critical terrorism studies. This text is the ultimate companion for students studying terrorism as part of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree. It guides students step-by-step to have a deeper understanding of terrorism and a more nuanced approach to their studies.

Contemporary State Terrorism - Theory and Practice (Hardcover): Richard Jackson, Eamon Murphy, Scott Poynting Contemporary State Terrorism - Theory and Practice (Hardcover)
Richard Jackson, Eamon Murphy, Scott Poynting
R3,218 Discovery Miles 32 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume aims to 'bring the state back into terrorism studies' and fill the notable gap that currently exists in our understanding of the ways in which states employ terrorism as a political strategy of internal governance or foreign policy. Within this broader context, the volume has a number of specific aims. First, it aims to make the argument that state terrorism is a valid and analytically useful concept which can do much to illuminate our understanding of state repression and governance, and illustrate the varieties of actors, modalities, aims, forms, and outcomes of this form of contemporary political violence. Secondly, by discussing a rich and diverse set of empirical case studies of contemporary state terrorism this volume explores and tests theoretical notions, generates new questions and provides a resource for further research. Thirdly, it contributes to a critical-normative approach to the study of terrorism more broadly and challenges dominant approaches and perspectives which assume that states, particularly Western states, are primarily victims and not perpetrators of terrorism. Given the scarceness of current and past research on state terrorism, this volume will make a genuine contribution to the wider field, particularly in terms of ongoing efforts to generate more critical approaches to the study of political terrorism. This book will be of much interest to students of critical terrorism studies, critical security studies, terrorism and political violence and political theory in general. Richard Jackson is Reader in International Politics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. He is the founding editor of the Routledge journal, Critical Studies on Terrorism and the convenor of the BISA Critical Studies on Terrorism Working Group (CSTWG). Eamon Murphy is Professor of History and International Relations at Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia. Scott Poynting is Professor in Sociology at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Critical Terrorism Studies at Ten - Contributions, Cases and Future Challenges (Paperback): Richard Jackson, Harmonie Toros,... Critical Terrorism Studies at Ten - Contributions, Cases and Future Challenges (Paperback)
Richard Jackson, Harmonie Toros, Lee Jarvis, Charlotte Heath-Kelly
R961 Discovery Miles 9 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Critical Terrorism Studies emerged around 2007, in the context of the rapidly intensifying War on Terror. It was in this era that "terrorism" became a "growth industry" which generated a huge amount of academic research as well as social and political activity. Yet a yawning gap developed between the actual material threat posed by terrorists, and the level of investment and activity devoted to responding to this threat. Similarly, the quality of terrorism research was noticeably weak and lacking in methodological rigour. Critical Terrorism Studies set out to explore the exceptional treatment of political violence, to challenge the political manipulation of terrorism fears and increase in draconian anti-terrorism legislation, and to address some of the conceptual and methodological failings of terrorism research. In the 10 years since the journal Critical Studies on Terrorism was launched, that context and mission remains as important as ever. This volume looks back on the achievements and failures of Critical Terrorism Studies in this period, as well as collecting state of the art research into terrorism discourse, queerness and the War on Terror, the Prevent Strategy, epistemology in terrorism studies, state repression, the ambiguous ends of militant campaigns, the epistemology of preventative counterterrorism, and the question of non-violent responses to terror. The chapters originally published in a special issue in Critical Studies in Terrorism.

Study of Navajo Concha Belts (Hardcover): Donald Richards Study of Navajo Concha Belts (Hardcover)
Donald Richards; Photographs by Karen Richards; Foreword by Jackson Clark, John Miller
R1,673 Discovery Miles 16 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The first comprehensive, exclusive study of Navajo concha belts, this extraordinary reference work is poised to be by far the most in-depth authority on the subject. Although most books about Southwestern Indian jewellery do include concha belts peripherally, this focused research by expert Donald P. Richards serves as a truly invaluable resource. An incredible breadth of information covers not only the physical but the human history of these unique belts: influences on southwestern art styles; materials, tools, and techniques; maker and age identification; determining authenticity; concha belts depicted in art; and even modern methods to determine metal composition by X-ray fluorescence (XRF). In addition to Navajo styles, it also includes related styles from the Zunis, Hopis, Pueblos, and the Plains Indians, plus selected related Asian examples -- all of which were collected from 51 sources in 14 states and 3 foreign countries. An extensive belt catalogue details 400+ individual belts, making this an extraordinary, long-awaited reference for collectors, galleries, and private dealers.

(Re)Constructing Cultures of Violence and Peace (Paperback): Richard Jackson (Re)Constructing Cultures of Violence and Peace (Paperback)
Richard Jackson
R1,181 Discovery Miles 11 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

(Re)Constructing Cultures of Violence and Peace brings together eleven original essays that were presented at the Third Global Conference on Cultures of Violence held in August 2002 in Prague. Covering an array of violence-related subjects, and a range of methodologies-textual, historical, theoretical, quantitative-the resulting volume is a multifaceted exploration of how cultures of violence are constructed, and how they can be deconstructed and replaced with cultures of peace. In part one, the authors aim to map and describe some of the important cultures of violence in our modern world-interstate war, civil war, criminal punishment, religious conflict, hooliganism-as an initial step towards understanding violence as a cultural construction. Part two explores aspects of the (re)construction of culture of peace. Specifically, the challenges encountered in attempting to conceptualise, study, or transform cultures of violence are examined. A common theme throughout the book is that violence is a fluid social and cultural construct-it is made by individuals, groups, and social forces. The implications of this are more than simply ontological: if violence is made, it can also be unmade; if cultures of violence are socially and politically constructed, they can also be de-constructed.

Critical Terrorism Studies - A New Research Agenda (Hardcover, New): Richard Jackson, Marie Breen Smyth, Jeroen Gunning Critical Terrorism Studies - A New Research Agenda (Hardcover, New)
Richard Jackson, Marie Breen Smyth, Jeroen Gunning
R3,100 Discovery Miles 31 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In response to the growth of a critical perspective on contemporary issues of terrorism, this edited volume brings together a number of leading scholars to debate the new subfield of 'critical terrorism studies'.

In the years since the 9/11 attacks, terrorism studies has undergone a major transformation from minor subfield of security studies into a large stand-alone field, and is probably one of the fastest expanding areas of research in the Western academic world. However, much of the literature is beset by a number of problems, limiting its potential for producing rigorous empirical findings and genuine theoretical advancement. In response to these weaknesses in the broader field, a small but increasing number of scholars have begun to articulate a critical perspective on contemporary issues of terrorism. This volume brings together a number of leading scholars to debate the need for and the shape of this exciting new subfield. The first part of the volume examines some of the main shortcomings and limitations of orthodox terrorism studies, while the second examines exactly what a 'critical' terrorism studies would look like. Contributors from a variety of methodological and disciplinary perspectives give this volume diversity, and it will lay the foundations for, and provoke debate about, the future research agenda of this new field.

This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies, terrorism studies and IR theory in general.

Last Voyage - Selected Poems of Giovanni Pascoli (Paperback): Deborah Brown, Professor Richard Jackson, Susan Thomas Last Voyage - Selected Poems of Giovanni Pascoli (Paperback)
Deborah Brown, Professor Richard Jackson, Susan Thomas
R341 Discovery Miles 3 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This first appearance of Pascoli's poems in English translation provides an introduction to his work for the English-speaking reader. The first section of the book includes some of Pascoli's brief lyric poems, many of them displaying his innovative use of image narrative. We see scenes of country life in his village near Barga, Italy, in the Apuan Alps, at the end of the 19th century. We see the aurora borealis, chickens, donkeys, women hanging laundry, the new railway and men crushing wheat.
The second part of the book consists of three somewhat formal narrative poems set in classical Rome and Greece.
The book ends with a long narrative sequence, an exciting and poignant re-imagining of Odysseus' famous tale told from the perspective of an old man. The aging hero falls asleep by the fire with Penelope and dreams a final voyage, in which he reassembles his old crew and visits the scenes of his earlier adventures: Circe, the Sirens, the Cyclops, Lotus Eaters and Calypso.

Revolutionary Nonviolence: Concepts, Cases and Controversies provides an advanced introduction to the central philosophy, ideas, themes, controversies and challenges of applying revolutionary nonviolence in political struggles today, with a particular emphasis on reframing nonviolence through a postcolonial lens. Bringing together an eminent group of researchers and activist-scholars, this collection focuses on a number of important questions: Is a commitment to radical nonviolence a necessity for generating revolutionary change in society? Should revolutionary movements abandon their reliance on political violence as a tool of change? What are some of the practical and theoretical challenges of adopting revolutionary nonviolence today? What can we learn from groups, actors and cases of people who have used revolutionary nonviolence to struggle against injustice? With a mix of theoretical and case study based chapters, the volume explores these and other important questions about how to generate necessary and lasting revolutionary change today.

Alice Martini, Kieran Ford, Richard Jackson
R1,880 Discovery Miles 18 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Encountering Extremism offers readers the opportunity to interrogate extremism through a plethora of theoretical perspectives and explore counter-extremism as it has materialised in plural local contexts. Offering a unique, in-depth critical interrogation, this volume seeks to understand and expose the implications of a fundamental problematic: how should scholars and strategists alike understand the contemporary shift from counter-terrorism to counter-extremism? Representing the first collection of scholarly works encountering this present problem of extremism and counter-extremism, this edited volume addresses the need for a critical examination of both the theoretical and the practical implications of this recent conceptual shift. For this very reason, this book brings together a diverse range of scholars, experts and practitioners to present valuable multidisciplinary analyses of the theory and practicalities of countering extremism. It is in this combination of both theoretical investigation and empirical analyses of local realities that the volume finds its added value, offering a unique contribution to a vital field of academic study. -- .

R1,120 Discovery Miles 11 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This new handbook is a comprehensive collection of cutting-edge essays that investigate the contribution of Critical Terrorism Studies to our understanding of contemporary terrorism and counterterrorism. Terrorism remains one of the most important security and political issues of our time. After 9/11, Critical Terrorism Studies (CTS) emerged as an alternative approach to the mainstream study of terrorism and counterterrorism, one which combined innovative methods with a searching critique of the abuses of the war on terror. This volume explores the unique contribution of CTS to our understanding of contemporary non-state violence and the state's response to it. It draws together contributions from key thinkers in the field who explore critical questions around the nature and study of terrorism, the causes of terrorism, state terrorism, responses to terrorism, the war on terror, and emerging issues in terrorism research. Covering a wide range of topics including key debates in the field and emerging issues, the Routledge Handbook of Critical Terrorism Studies will set a benchmark for future research on terrorism and the response to it. This handbook will be of great interest to students of terrorism studies, political violence, critical security studies and IR in general.

Richard Jackson, Daniela Pisoiu
R3,953 Discovery Miles 39 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Contemporary Debates on Terrorism is an innovative textbook, addressing a number of key issues in terrorism studies from both traditional and 'critical' perspectives. This second edition has been revised and updated to cover contemporary issues such as the rise of ISIL and cyberterrorism. In recent years, the terrorism studies field has grown in quantity and quality, with a growing number of scholars rooted in various professional disciplines beginning to debate the complex dynamics underlying this category of violence. Within the broader field, there are a number of identifiable controversies and questions which divide scholarly opinion and generate opposing arguments. These relate to theoretical issues, such as the definition of terrorism and state terrorism, substantive issues like the threat posed by al Qaeda/ISIL and the utility of different responses to terrorism, different pathways leading people to engage in terrorist tactics and ethical issues such as the use of drones. This new edition brings together in one place many of the field's leading scholars to debate the key issues relating to a set of 16 important controversies and questions. The format of the volume involves a leading scholar taking a particular position on the controversy, followed by an opposing or alternative viewpoint written by another scholar. In addition to the pedagogic value of allowing students to read opposing arguments in one place, the volume will also be important for providing an overview of the state of the field and its key lines of debate. This book will be essential reading for students of terrorism studies and political violence, critical terrorism studies, security studies and IR in general.

Writing the War on Terrorism - Language, Politics and Counter-Terrorism (Paperback): Richard Jackson Writing the War on Terrorism - Language, Politics and Counter-Terrorism (Paperback)
Richard Jackson
R402 Discovery Miles 4 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'Writing the war on terrorism' examines the public language of the war on terrorism, and the way that rhetoric has been used to justify the global counter-terrorism offensive as a response to 9/11. It discusses how language has been used to deliberately manipulate public anxiety about terrorist threats to gain support for military action, and how the abuse of Iraqi prisoners has been normalised through rhetoric and practice. . It explains how the war on terrorism has been reproduced and amplified by key social actors and how it has become the dominant political narrative in America today, enjoying widespread bipartisan and popular support. The author argues that the normalisation and institutionalisation of the administration's current counter-terrorism approach is damaging to society's ethical values and to democratic political participation. Lying at the intersection of International Relations, American politics, terrorism studies, discourse analysis, communication studies and cultural studies, this book will have genuine interdisciplinary appeal. -- .
