How Elections are reported has important implications for the
health of democracy and informed citizenship. But, how informative
are the news media during campaigns? What kind of logic do they
follow? How well do they serve citizens? Based on original research
as well as the most comprehensive assessment of election studies to
date, Cushion and Thomas examine how campaigns are reported in many
advanced Western democracies. In doing so, they engage with debates
about the mediatization of politics, media systems, information
environments, media ownership, regulation, political news,
horserace journalism, objectivity, impartiality, agenda-setting,
and the relationship between media and democracy more generally.
Focusing on the most recent US and UK election campaigns, they
consider how the logic of Election coverage could be rethought in
ways that better serve the democratic needs of citizens. Above all,
they argue that Election reporting should be driven by a public
logic, where the agenda of voters takes centre stage in the
campaign and the policies of respective political parties receive
more airtime and independent scrutiny. The book is essential
reading for scholars and students in political communication and
journalism studies, political science, media and communication
studies.
A fascinating and enlightening homage to the wealth of England's
cultural heritage, the 7th Earl of Bradford's charmingly
illustrated recipe book should take pride of place on the shelves
of historian and gourmand alike. Introducing the history of English
food and cooking, and the philosophy behind his successful Porters
restaurant in London's Covent Garden, Richard Bradford and his
co-author, food writer Carol Wilson, write lovingly about the
countryside and simple, high-quality produce. From crenellated and
turreted spiced meat pies to the quintessentially English
institution of afternoon tea; from the kitchens of great
aristocratic houses to humble cottages, the reader will feel
inspired to recreate an eclectic selection of dishes with
easy-to-follow recipes. With numerous practical tips, anecdotes
from Lord Bradford's private and professional kitchens, and
suggestions for putting fresh spin on classics, this collection of
over 100 sweet and savoury recipes reveals the pleasure in
preparing a simple asparagus dish or a rich dark Christmas Pudding.
'Porters English Cookery Bible' is an indispensable companion that
tempts us to discover the delicious, and often unexpected, variety
of dishes from all regions of England.
Richard Curtin has directed the University of Michigan's consumer
sentiment surveys for more than four decades. His analyses of
recent trends in consumer expectations are regularly covered in the
worldwide press. In this book, Curtin presents a new theory of
expectations. Whereas conventional theories presume that consumers
play a passive role in the macro economy, simply reacting to
current trends in incomes, prices, and interest rates, Curtin
proposes a new empirically consistent theory. He argues that
expectations are formed by an automatic process that utilizes
conscious and nonconscious processes, passion and reason,
information from public and private sources, and social networks.
Consumers ultimately reach a decision that serves both the micro
decision needs of individuals and reflects the common influence of
the macro environment. Drawing on empirical observations, Curtin
not only demonstrates the importance of consumer sentiment, but
also how it can foreshadow the cyclical turning points in the
economy.
Winner of the Lincoln Prize
Acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin illuminates Lincoln's
political genius in this highly original work, as the one-term
congressman and prairie lawyer rises from obscurity to prevail over
three gifted rivals of national reputation to become president.
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates,
and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from
the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged
as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry.
Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the
presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to
secession and civil war. That Lincoln succeeded, Goodwin
demonstrates, was the result of a character that had been forged by
experiences that raised him above his more privileged and
accomplished rivals. He won because he possessed an extraordinary
ability to put himself in the place of other men, to experience
what they were feeling, to understand their motives and desires.
It was this capacity that enabled Lincoln as president to bring his
disgruntled opponents together, create the most unusual cabinet in
history, and marshal their talents to the task of preserving the
Union and winning the war.
We view the long, horrifying struggle from the vantage of the White
House as Lincoln copes with incompetent generals, hostile
congressmen, and his raucous cabinet. He overcomes these obstacles
by winning the respect of his former competitors, and in the case
of Seward, finds a loyal and crucial friend to see him through.
This brilliant multiple biography is centered on Lincoln's mastery
of men and how it shaped the most significant presidency in the
nation's history.
Wisdom comes in many forms, and the search for wisdom has many
expressions. In Dharma Delight, celebrated New York abstract artist
and Zen student Rodney Alan Greenblat uses light-hearted, inviting
narrative and vivid pop art paintings to celebrate the joys of
living life from the inside out. Part graphic guide book, part
personal testimony, part art book, Dharma Delight illustrates how
seeking the path of compassion and acceptance can be as zany and
exuberant, as it is profound and rewarding. This thoroughly modern
and accessible exploration of Enlightenment, including what it is
and where to seek it, shows us how to recognize the perfection in
ourselves. Sutras (teachings), bodhisattvas (enlightened beings),
and jataka tales (parables) are presented in a way that is simple,
upbeat, and fun to read. The colourful, inspiring paintings, some
of which are new and some of which are well-known within the New
York art scene and beyond, are an imaginative and affirming
mind's-eye view of Buddhist teaching today. Dharma Delight is
greatly appealing to all ages, and together, the words and
illustrations are a warm and cheerful invitation to Buddhism
newcomers and a cool splash of refreshment to any traveller on the
road to Enlightenment.
This is Part 2 of a two-volume set. Since Oscar Zariski organized a
meeting in 1954, there has been a major algebraic geometry meeting
every decade: Woods Hole (1964), Arcata (1974), Bowdoin (1985),
Santa Cruz (1995), and Seattle (2005). The American Mathematical
Society has supported these summer institutes for over 50 years.
Their proceedings volumes have been extremely influential,
summarizing the state of algebraic geometry at the time and
pointing to future developments. The most recent Summer Institute
in Algebraic Geometry was held July 2015 at the University of Utah
in Salt Lake City, sponsored by the AMS with the collaboration of
the Clay Mathematics Institute. This volume includes surveys
growing out of plenary lectures and seminar talks during the
meeting. Some present a broad overview of their topics, while
others develop a distinctive perspective on an emerging topic.
Topics span both complex algebraic geometry and arithmetic
questions, specifically, analytic techniques, enumerative geometry,
moduli theory, derived categories, birational geometry, tropical
geometry, Diophantine questions, geometric representation theory,
characteristic $p$ and $p$-adic tools, etc. The resulting articles
will be important references in these areas for years to come.

Across four different districts of a city that has torn itself to
shreds, four interweaving stories, told by four different eminent
crime writers, play out. In 'Four Corners' a morally dubious banker
must keep his employer happy at any cost. In 'Punhos Sagrados' a
boxer finds himself torn between honour and the woman he loves, who
isn't his wife. 'Golden Geese' follows a criminal with a terrifying
condition who must come to terms with the life he's led. Finally,
'Jamais Vu' provides a stunning denouement as a man searches
endlessly for his missing daughter.

Tommy Lee Wallace co-writes and directs this horror based on
Stephen King's novel. In 1990, a group of seven childhood friends,
known as The Losers Club, reunite to combat a mysterious threat
which they had thought was long since buried. Lurking in the
shadows, and preying on their innermost fears, a shape-shifting,
supernatural predator, manifesting as a killer clown called
Pennywise (Tim Curry), prepares to strike again.
The stories of the men and women who dug for gold on Williams Creek
are told in this revised and updated edition of a Canadian
bestseller. The legendary town of Barkerville is flourishing today,
just as it did more than 150 years ago, but this time under the
care of professional and amateur historians. Richard Thomas Wright
peels back the pages of history as he unearths the area's history
and chronicles the fortunes and the follies of gold-rush-era
Barkerville. The result of years of around-the-world research,
Barkerville and the Cariboo Goldfields brings to life the men and
women of the creeks who came in search of gold and left their mark
on BC history. Wright mined the archives to bring forth new
information on the development of the Cariboo goldfields and nearby
places of interest. "Barkerville" includes dozens of little-known
historical photos and a complete index. It is the best, most
comprehensive source of detailed information on this important
national heritage site.
From its greatest heroes to its darkest villains...the Bible as
never seen before! The men and women of the Bible were not perfect,
but nor were they ordinary. Faith gave some power. To lead. To
save. To destroy evil. Others succumbed to the darkness. But still
more was required. An ultimate hero. To fight the ultimate battle.

This book provides a set of integrated frameworks-capital, systems,
and objects-that transcend managerial or technology hype by
focusing on the long-term fundamentals that sustain organizational
success. Many organizations are currently addressing two important
transformational issues: ecological sustainability and
digitization. Sustainability is a goal, an end, and digitization is
a process, a means to achieve a goal. This book introduces a
flexible model that can be applied to current and future
organizational challenges, including sustainability and
digitization, because the fundamentals are constant. This book is
designed to serve two purposes for the readers: first, to present
three conceptual foundations for designing and operating
organizations (capital, systems, and objects in section 1); and
second, to provide a reference source for implementing these ideas
in an organization (sections 2 and 3). The first section of the
book, chapters 1 through 7, sets forth the conceptual foundations.
The chapters mix concepts and practical examples to give a new way
of thinking about the setting in which one may work many days each
year. The second section provides details and associated examples
of every one of the thirty-six forms of capital conversion. It also
illustrates how the five foundational systems support capital
conversion in a variety of ways. Finally, the third section is
about measuring capital and systems. The book will resonate with
practitioners and students of strategy, leadership, and
organizational design. It is critical reading for leaders, industry
experts, and general readers who want to understand how over
thousands of years the capital creation system has developed
today's world and will fashion its future.
This work is an English translation, featured opposite the original
Dutch text, of the new law on companies and other legal persons
contained in Book 2 of the Netherlands Antilles Civil Code, which
entered in force on 1 March 2004. It includes a translation of the
transitional regulations enacted following the introduction of the
new legislation. The translation made by H.C.S. Warendorf, member
of the Amsterdam Bar, and R.L. Thomas, solicitor in London, is
published in Kluwer Law International's Series of Legislation in
Translation. For non-Dutch speaking residents of the Netherlands
Antilles and Aruba, practitioners advising on Netherlands Antilles
law as well persons or firms interested in the regulation of
company and corporate law, this work will be essential. H.C.S.
Warendorf and R. L. Thomas, experienced legal translators, made
similar translations of Dutch corporate and commercial law in the
loose leaf series Companies and Other Legal Persons under
Netherlands and Netherlands Antilles Law and Netherlands Business
Legislation, published by Kluwer Law International.
