Channel 4 drama series written by Charlie Brooker which explores the role of technology in modern society, in particular the potential dark side of humanity's gadget addiction. Each of the episodes is a stand-alone piece and is set in a slightly different world.

Season 1
The National Anthem follows the attempts of the British Prime Minister, Michael Callow, to negotiate the release of a royal princess, while faced with an outrageous ransom request and a titillated media. Fifteen Million Merits is set in a grim, gadget-dominated world where the only chance of individual glory is a game show called Hot Shot, where contestants will be assessed by Judge Hope and Judge Charity. The Entire History Of You imagines a world in which it is possible to record your own memories and play them back at will.

Season 2
In Be Right Back, Martha connects with her recently deceased partner, Ash, through a service which uses social media to clone him. But even as Martha becomes attached to the artificial Ash, she begins to realise that he cannot replace the real one. In White Bear, Victoria wakes up to discover that she has lost her memory. When she goes outside she finds a number of people recording her on their phones and soon after she is chased by a masked gunman. Confused and frightened, she encounters Jem, who tells her that a transmitter known as White Bear is responsible for transforming the majority of the population into mindless voyeurs. Victoria joins Jem in her effort to destroy the transmitter but comes to learn that not everything is as it seems... In The Waldo Moment, Jamie is a depressed, struggling comedian who, through motion capture, interviews politicians as a cartoon bear called Waldo. When the channel give Waldo his own pilot, for a stunt Jamie finds himself entered into a political race that quickly gets out of control.

White Christmas
In a mysterious and remote snowy outpost, Matt and Potter share a Christmas meal together and swap creepy tales of their earlier lives in the outside world. Matt is a charismatic American trying to bring the reserved, secretive Potter out of his shell. Are both men who they appear to be? Along the way we see Matt offering an unusual form of romantic guidance to an inexperienced young man, watch Great thrust headlong into a nightmarish world of ‘smart' gadgetry, and explore what might happen if you could 'block' people in real life, just as you can on Facebook or Twitter. All three stories are bound together into a suitably unsettling whole. Fans of eerie Christmas stories are in for a treat...

Lyn Rigby's story charts the unfathomably difficult time she has endured since May 2013 when her son, 25-year-old Fusilier Lee Rigby, was butchered on a London high street by two British-born young men compelled to avenge the killing of Muslims by the British armed forces. The savage brutality of the killing shocked the nation, and the ramifications spread to the highest levels of government, questioning the security of social networking sites that allowed the fanatics who murdered her son to discuss their intentions online and unchecked. Lyn Rigby has questions for government and the military, but overall it is her story of sorrow, her campaign for a memorial dedicated to Lee's memory, her admiration for the 'angels of Woolwich' and, hopefully, belief that her son did not die in vain. She is writing this book as a tribute to Lee - to give him a voice and to tell his story not just as a soldier, but as a vibrant, happy young man with a son and a future that has been so cruelly and viciously been taken from him.

British Royal Navy Captain James Cook's voyages of exploration across and around the Pacific Ocean were a marvel of maritime achievement, and provided the first accurate map of the Pacific. The expeditions answered key scientific, economic, and geographic questions, and inspired some of the most influential images of the Pacific made by Europeans. Now readers can immerse themselves in the adventure through the collections of London's National Maritime Museum, which illuminate every aspect of the voyages: oil paintings of lush landscapes, scientific and navigational instruments, ship plans, globes, charts and maps, rare books and manuscripts, coins and medals, ethnographic material, and personal effects. Each artifact holds a story that sheds light on Captain Cook, the crews he commanded, and the effort's impact on world history. Showcasing one of the richest resources of Cook-related material in the world, this publication invites readers to engage with the extraordinary voyages-manifested in material culture-and their continuing significance today.

The entire comedy drama series from Alan Plater. In 'The Beiderbecke Affair' (1984), woodwork teacher and jazz buff Trevor Chaplin (James Bolam) has always fantasized that a beautiful blonde will enter his life and simultaneously provide him with rare recordings of his hero Bix Beiderbecke. Unlikely as it seems, this is just what happens one evening when Trevor is at home in his flat. It is an encounter which will ultimately involve him and his colleague, independent political campaigner Jill Swinburne (Barbara Flynn), in exploding lawnmowers, political corruption and the strange world of 'black economists' Big Al (Terence Rigby) and Little Norm (Danny Schiller). In 'The Beiderbecke Tapes' (1987) Trevor and Jill find themselves plunged into another jazz-related mystery when the former purchases some Bix Beiderbecke tapes from a pub barman. Jill is intrigued when one of the tapes contains a conversation about the planned dumping of nuclear waste in the Yorkshire Dales, her curiosity being roused still further by the discovery that the barman who sold Trevor the tapes has now gone missing... The intrepid duo soon find themselves up to their necks in trouble once more as their investigation takes them from the relative safety of Yorkshire to the mean streets of Amsterdam and Edinburgh. In the final part of the trilogy, 'The Beiderbecke Connection' (1988), Trevor and Jill are still living together, and they now have a baby boy to look after as well. Their household is increased still further when old friend Big Al asks them to take in a refugee as a favour; Trevor is reluctant until he discovers that his new guest is, like him, an ardent jazz fan. However, this visitor is only the first of many who will involve Trevor and Jill in yet more intrigue and deception.

The late fourteenth century was the age of the Black Death, the Peasants' Revolt, the Hundred Years War, the deposition of Richard II, the papal schism and the emergence of the heretical doctrines of John Wyclif and the Lollards. These social, political and religious crises and conflicts were addressed not only by preachers and by those involved in public affairs but also by poets, including Chaucer and Langland. Above all, though, it is in the verse of John Gower that we find the most direct engagement with contemporary events. Yet, surprisingly, few historians have examined Gower's responses to these events or have studied the broader moral and philosophical outlook which he used to make sense of them. Here, a number of eminent medievalists seek to demonstrate what historians can add to our understanding of Gower's poetry and his ideas about society (the nobility and chivalry, the peasants and the 1381 revolt, urban life and the law), the Church (the clergy, papacy, Lollardy, monasticism, and the friars) gender (masculinity and women and power), politics (political theory and the deposition of Richard II) and science and astronomy. The book also offers an important reassessment of Gower's biography based on newly-discovered primary sources. STEPHEN RIGBY is Emeritus Professor of Medieval Social and Economic History at the University of Manchester; SIAN ECHARD is Professor of English, University of British Columbia. Contributors: Mark Bailey, Michael Bennett, Martha Carlin, James Davis, Seb Falk, Christopher Fletcher, David Green, David Lepine, Martin Heale, Katherine Lewis, Anthony Musson, Stephen Rigby, Jens Roehrkasten.
