Screening The Novel - The Theory And Practice Of Literary Dramatization (Paperback): Keith Selby, Robert Giddings, Chris Wensley Screening The Novel - The Theory And Practice Of Literary Dramatization (Paperback)

The book takes as its theme the relationship between literature and the contemporary means of production and distribution collectively termed 'the media' - in particular, film and television. The intention of the book is to explore and evaluate the mutual opportunities and restrictions in this relationship. In the grammar of our culture there seems to be an accepted opinion that print is superior in terms of cultural production to film, radio or television, that to read a book is somehow a 'higher' cultural activity than seeing a play on television or seeing a film. By the same token, a novel is a 'superior' work of art to film or television. The longer perspective reveals that traditionally there always is a greater respect paid to the previous mode of literary production - poetry was superior to drama, poetic drama was superior to the novel, and film attained cult and classic status initially over television.

The best Sherlock Holmes stories, as selected and introduced by Arthur Conan Doyle himself"" ""When this competition was first mooted I went into it in a most light-hearted way, thinking that it would be the easiest thing in the world to pick out the twelve best of the Holmes stories. In practice I found that I had engaged myself in a serious task . . ."" In 1927, "Strand" magazine challenged its readers to guess which of his Sherlock Holmes stories Arthur Conan Doyle himself rated as his very best. (Mr R. T. Newman of Spring Hill, Wellingborough, won 100 for successfully guessing 10 of the 12 stories correctly.) Doyle revealed his choice and, in his own inimitable way, explained his reasoning in an article for the magazine. The stories included "The Speckled Band," "The Final Problem," and "The Dancing Men." Arthur Conan Doyle's favorite 12 Sherlock Holmes stories are now published together for the first time, with his original "Strand" article to introduce his own selection.

In the first of the Bulldog Drummond stories, the wealthy former WWI officer looks for adventure as a private detective ""Demobilized officer, finding peace incredibly tedious, would welcome diversion. Legitimate, if possible; but crime, if of a comparatively humorous description, no objection. Excitement essential . . . Reply at once Box X10."" When the formidable Captain Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond places this newspaper advertisement, hungry for adventure after the end of World War I, he embarks on a career as the invincible guardian of his country. His first reply comes from a beautiful young woman who sends him to investigate what at first looks like blackmail, but turns out to be far more complicated and dangerous. The rescue of a kidnapped millionaire, later found with his thumbs horribly mangled, leads Drummond to uncover a political conspiracy of awesome scope and villainy, masterminded by the ruthless Carl Peterson. Originally published in 1920, "Bulldog Drummond" set the standard: as Ian Fleming himself confessed, James Bond was Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer from the waist down, but Bulldog Drummond from the waist up.

"""The first real thriller." --Ken Follett"" While on a duck-hunting holiday sailing in the Frisian Isles, Carruthers and his friend Davies become suspicious of German naval activity off the North Sea Coast. The pair decide to investigate, are soon embroiled in a world of suspense and intrigue, and set about foiling nothing less than a plot to invade England. Initially published in 1903, this thriller proved a prescient vision of the Anglo-German conflict that was to culminate in World War I. This adventure is now regarded as the first--and one of the best--spy novels ever written, inspiring such later masters of the genre as John Buchan, Ian Fleming, and John le Carre.

""Where was the detective story until Poe breathed the breath of life into it?" --Arthur Conan Doyle" In "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," all of Paris is in shock following the ghastly murder of two women--but with all witnesses claiming to have heard the suspect speak a different language, the police are stumped. When Dupin finds a suspicious hair at the crime scene, and places an advert in the newspaper asking if anyone has lost an "Ourang-Outang," things take an unexpected turn. In "The Mystery of Marie Roget," Dupin and his sidekick undertake to solve the murder of the beautiful young woman who works in a perfume shop, whose body is found floating in the Seine. "The Purloined Letter," the final story, finds Dupin engaged on a matter of national importance: a highly compromising letter has been pilfered from the Queen's private drawing room. The police know who the unscrupulous culprit is, but they can not find the letter, and therefore are unable to pin the crime on him. It it is up to Dupin to solve the case--which he does, with characteristic flair. A master of rational deduction and intellectual insight, and protoype for Holmes and Poirot, Dupin sees things for what they are, rather than what they appear to be.
