Rudyard Kipling's (1865-1936) work is known and loved the world over by children and adults alike; it has been translated into many languages, and onto the cinema screen. This volume brings together for the first time some 86 uncollected short fictions. Almost all of them will be unfamiliar to readers; some are unrecorded in any bibliography; some are here published for the first time. Most of them come from Kipling's Indian years and show him experimenting with a great variety of forms and tones. We see the young Kipling enjoying the exercise of his craft; yet the voice that emerges throughout is always unmistakably his own, changing the scene every time the curtain is raised.

HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics. How did the leopard get its spots? Why do the tides ebb and flow? How did the elephant get its trunk? And how was the alphabet made? Rudyard Kipling's classic collection of fables answers the great questions of animal- and humankind in a fun, eloquent and magical way - for children and adults alike. Kipling's beautifully imaginative answers echo the animal fables he heard during his childhood in India, paired with the folk tales he collected throughout his life. Kipling's enjoyment in playing with language, as well as his own delight in fatherhood, makes these stories a joy to read aloud, and children will request these tales as bedtime stories again and again. However, adults will also revel in Kipling's fanciful storytelling and gift for language, as every reading uncovers a new joke, subtext or fascinating embellishment. From the author of 'The Jungle Book' and 'Kim', 'Just So Stories' is the newest addition to the available canon of Kipling's work available in the handy format of Collins Classics!

The beloved children's classics Alice in Wonderland, The Jungle Book, and Pinocchio are the inspiration for this series of card games. Each game revolves around the characters in one of these stories and the rule booklet includes an adapted version of the original text that inspired the game. The cards are beautifully illustrated by Spanish artist Laura Brenlla. 'Play with Pinocchio' is a version of "Cheat" in order to win, you have to know how to lie with confidence (like Pinocchio...). The deck includes 50 cards, divided into 5 groups of 10 cards all based on one of the Pinocchio characters: Pinocchio, the Fairy with Turquoise Hair, Geppetto, the Cat, and the Fox. In 'Play with Mowgli and the Jungle Book' each player chooses a card with one of the characters and places it in front of him/ her. They then have to imitate the sound made by the animal on the card, which remains only visible only to him/her. The cards are then dealt to all the players who will in turn up the cards in their pack. When someone plays a card featuring a character appearing on another player's pile, the players involved challenge each other by trying to repeat the sound of the character. The first to do this gives his/her cards to the other. The game is won by the first player to get rid of all the cards in his/her hand. The fun lies in trying to remember the person-character pairing, and in repeating the sound before your opponent does so. There are 48 cards in the deck. AGES: 5+ AUTHOR: Laura Brenlla started learning to draw in an academy at the age of 16, but she grew up holding a pencil. She won a scholarship to study Art at Universidad Europea in Madrid, and once she graduated she specialised in cartoons in a two years course. Later she was selected to receive a digital clean-up training at prestigious animation studio SPA, with Fernando Moro in charge. Strong drawing skills were developed at SPA.

The Jungle Books can be regarded as classic stories told by an adult to children. But they also constitute a complex literary work of art in which the whole of Kipling's philosophy of life is expressed in miniature. They are best known for the `Mowgli' stories; the tale of a baby abandoned and brought up by wolves, educated in the ways and secrets of the jungle by Kaa the python, Baloo the bear, and Bagheera the black panther. The stories, a mixture of fantasy, myth, and magic, are underpinned by Kipling's abiding preoccupation with the theme of self-discovery, and the nature of the `Law'. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Tiger!' Letting in the Jungle The King's Ankus Red Dog The Spring Running In the Rukh For more than one hundred years, the stories from The Jungle Book have enchanted readers, both young and old, with their important moral lessons and engaging narratives. By anthropomorphizing the animal characters in the stories-in a vein similar to Aesop-famed writer Rudyard Kipling provides readers with parables that teach family and community values while simultaneously entertaining and inspiring. Consequently, these stories have stood the test of time, have been published in a variety of editions and publications, and continue to be reprinted today. Including a new foreword by leading children's literature expert Michael Patrick Hearn, Mowgli of the Jungle Book spotlights Kipling's classic character as he's faced with an abundance of epic adventures and challenges-all of which have underlying moral dilemmas sure to teach readers what matters most.

HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics. `The man's cub is mine, Lungri - mine to me! He shall not be killed. He shall live to run with the Pack and to hunt with the Pack; and in the end, look you, hunter of little naked cubs - frog-eater - fish-killer - he shall hunt thee!' Mowgli, the man-cub, is raised in the Indian jungle by a pack of wolves. As he grows older, he learns the `Law of the Jungle' with the help of his friends, Bagheera the Panther, Baloo the Bear and Kaa the Python, who try to keep him safe from fearsome Shere Khan, the tiger. Eventually he comes into contact with his own kind, and begins to question his very nature. One of the greatest myths ever told, and the subject of numerous film adaptations, The Jungle Book is Rudyard Kipling's best-known work. Drawing on his own childhood spent in India, as well as ancient fables, these stories of good and evil, and man and nature, have captivated readers for generations.

With a new Introduction by Cedric Watts, Research Professor of English, University of Sussex. The diverse tales selected for this volume display the astonishing virtuosity of Rudyard Kipling's early writings. A Nobel prize-winner, Kipling was phenomenally productive and imaginative, displaying a literary mastery of idioms, technology and technical terms, exotic locations, and social range. He gained immense popularity, becoming (as these stories indicate) the knowledgeable spokesman for a wide public. Later, although Kipling's right-wing views increasingly incurred hostility, his creativity remained formidable. In this rich collection, we encounter bold realism, poignant nostalgia, dark comedy, the vividly horrific, the exuberantly fanciful and the disturbingly uncanny.

Introduction and Notes by R.T. Jones, Honorary Fellow of the University of York. This edition of the poetry of Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) includes all the poems contained in the Definitive Edition of 1940. In his lifetime, Kipling was widely regarded as the unofficial Poet Laureate, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. His poetry is striking for its many rhythms and popular forms of speech, and Kipling was equally at home with dramatic monologues and extended ballads. He is often thought of as glorifying war, militarism, and the British Empire, but an attentive reading of the poems does not confirm that view. This edition reprints George Orwell's hard-hitting account of Kipling's poems, first published in 1942, and generally regarded as one of the most important contributions to critical discussion of Kipling.

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) is perhaps the most controversial major English poetof the last two centuries, not least because of his apparent enthusiasm for the empire. A child of British India, he first became famous for tales of imperial life, notably Kim, the Jungle Book and Barrack Room Ballads. Kipling wrote verse in every classical form from the epigram to the ode, but his most distinctive gift was for the ballads and narrative poems in which he draws vivid characters in universal situations and articulates profound truths in plain language. Yet he was also a subtle and deeply affecting anatomist of the human heart, with a feeling for the natural world which rivals his younger contemporary, D. H. Lawrence. Shattered by World War I in which he lost his only son, his work darkens and deepens in later years, but never loses its extraordinary vitality.

Kipling's The Eyes of Asia takes the reader on a remarkable journey of discovery into the heart and soul of four soldiers of the Indian Army who fought for King and the British Empire in the First World War.Their touching stories are narrated through a series of imagined letters written in the blood-drenched battlefields of war-torn France and makeshift hospitals on England's coastline to their loved ones back home in the relative peace of their villages in India and the North-West Frontier. Kipling brings the experiences of these uneducated Sikh, Hindu and Muslim military men to life, weaving the horrors of a foreign war like no other with acts of kindness arising from cultural encounters with French farmers and British military personnel.Through unofficial access to translations of scores of intercepted Indian Army letters, Kipling gained an intimate understanding of the plight and humanity of men neglected in Western literature after the War. To Kipling, they were unsung heroes whose sacrifices had made a decisive impact on the British war effort.

How did the camel get his hump? Why won't cats do as they are told"? Who invented reading and writing? How did an inquisitive little elephant change the lives of elephants everywhere. Kipling's imagined answers to such questions draw on the beast fables he heard as a child in India, as well as on folk traditions he later collected all over the world. He plays games with language, exploring the relationships between thought, speech, and written word. He also celebrates his own joy in fatherhood. The tales were told to his own and his friends' children over many years before he wrote them down, adding poems and his own illustrations. They invite older and younger readers to share a magical experience, each contributing to the other's pleasure but each can also enjoy them alone, as more jokes, subtexts, and exotic references emerge with every reading. This fully illustrated edition icludes two extra stories and Kipling's own explanation of the title.
