No is perhaps the most important and certainly the most powerful word in the language. Every day we find ourselves in situations where we need to say No-to people at work, at home, and in our communities-because No is the word we must use to protect ourselves and to stand up for everything and everyone that matters to us.
But as we all know, the wrong No can also destroy what we most value by alienating and angering people. That's why saying No the right way is crucial. The secret to saying No without destroying relationships lies in the art of the Positive No, a proven technique that anyone can learn.
This indispensable book gives you a simple three-step method for saying a Positive No. It will show you how to assert and defend your key interests; how to make your No firm and strong; how to resist the other side's aggression and manipulation; and how to do all this while still getting to Yes. In the end, the Positive No will help you get not just to any Yes but to the right Yes, the one that truly serves your interests.
Based on William Ury's celebrated Harvard University course for managers and professionals, The Power of a Positive No offers concrete advice and practical examples for saying No in virtually any situation. Whether you need to say No to your customer or your coworker, your employee or your CEO, your child or your spouse, you will find in this book the secret to saying No clearly, respectfully, and effectively.
In today's world of high stress and limitless choices, the pressure to give in and say Yes grows greater every day, producing overload and overwork, expanding e-mail and eroding ethics. Never has No been more needed. A Positive No has the power to profoundly transform our lives by enabling us to say Yes to what counts-our own needs, values, and priorities.
Understood this way, No is the new Yes. And the Positive No may be the most valuable life skill you'll ever learn!

Real world negotiation examples and strategies from one of the most highly respected authorities in the field This unique book can help you change your approach to negotiation by learning key strategies and techniques from actual cases. Through hard to find real world examples you will learn exactly how to effectively and productively negotiate. The Book of Real World Negotiations: Successful Strategies from Business, Government and Daily Life shines a light on real world negotiation examples and cases, rather than discussing hypothetical scenarios. It reveals what is possible through preparation, persistence, creativity, and taking a strategic approach to your negotiations. Many of us enter negotiations with skepticism and without understanding how to truly negotiate well. Because we lack knowledge and confidence, we may abandon the negotiating process prematurely or agree to deals that leave value on the table. The Book of Real World Negotiations will change that once and for all by immersing you in these real world scenarios. As a result, you'll be better able to grasp the true power of negotiation to deal with some of the most difficult problems you face or to put together the best deals possible. This book also shares critical insights and lessons for instructors and students of negotiation, especially since negotiation is now being taught in virtually all law schools, many business schools, and in the field of conflict resolution. Whether you're a student, instructor, or anyone who wants to negotiate successfully, you'll be able to carefully examine real world negotiation situations that will show you how to achieve your objectives in the most challenging of circumstances. The cases are organized by realms--domestic business cases, international business cases, governmental cases and cases that occur in daily life. From these cases you will learn more about: Exactly how to achieve Win-Win outcomes The critical role of underlying interests The kind of thinking that goes into generating creative options How to consider your and the other negotiator's Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement (BATNA) Negotiating successfully in the face of power Achieving success when negotiating cross-culturally Once you come to understand through these cases that negotiation is the art of the possible, you'll stop saying "a solution is impossible." With the knowledge and self-assurance you gain from this book, you'll roll up your sleeves and keep negotiating until you reach a mutually satisfactory outcome!

Poems of the Five Mountains - An Introduction to the Literature of the Zen Monasteries (Paperback): Marian Ury Poems of the Five Mountains - An Introduction to the Literature of the Zen Monasteries (Paperback)
Marian Ury
R266 Discovery Miles 2 660 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

This second, revised edition of a pioneering volume, long out of print, presents translations of Japanese Zen poems on sorrow, old age, homesickness, the seasons, the ravages of time, solitude, the scenic beauty of the landscape of Japan, and monastic life. Composed by Japanese Zen monks who lived from the last quarter of the thirteenth century to the middle of the fifteenth century, these poems represent a portion of the best of the writing called in Japanese gozan bungaku, ""literature of the five mountains."" ""Five mountains"" or ""five monasteries"" refers to the system by which the Zen monasteries were hierarchically ordered and governed. For the monks in the monasteries, poetry functioned as a means not only of expressing religious convictions and personal feelings but also of communicating with others in a civilized and courteous fashion. Effacing barriers of time and space, the practice of Chinese poetry also made it possible for Japanese authors to feel at one with their Chinese counterparts and the great poets of antiquity. This was a time when Zen as an institution was being established and contact with the Chinese mainland becoming increasingly frequent - ten of the sixteen poets represented here visited China. Marian Ury has provided a short but substantial introduction to the Chinese poetry of Japanese gozan monasteries, and her translations of the poetry are masterful. Poems of the Five Mountains is an important work for anyone interested in Japanese literature, Chinese literature, East Asian Religion, and Zen Buddhism.

In this funny and practical guide, a behavioral scientist turned dating coach helps you understand - and overcome - the hidden forces keeping you from finding lasting love. Have you ever looked around and wondered, "Why has everyone found love except me?" You're not the only one. We've gone from the first iPod ("1,000 songs in your pocket") to Tinder - 1,000 potential dates in your pocket. Choosing a partner is harder now than ever before. A lasting relationship doesn't just appear in your life: it's the culmination of a series of decisions, including when to get out there, whom to date, how to end it with the wrong person, when to settle down with the right one, and everything in between. Often we don't understand why we make certain choices, and that leads to mistakes. And those mistakes thwart us on our quest to find love. Drawing from years studying psychology and relationships, behavioral scientist turned dating coach Logan Ury reveals the hidden forces that fuel faulty decision-making and prevent us from finding love. But awareness on its own doesn't lead to results. Knowing you shouldn't date "bad boys" or "manic pixie dream girls," for example, doesn't make them any less appealing - you have to actually change your behavior. Ury shows you how. You'll discover what's really holding you back in dating (it's not what you think), why your current dating app habits aren't helping you find a great match (and how to fix them), and why there's no such thing as "The One" (but you'll find love anyway), and much, much more. This book focuses on a different decision in each chapter - from setting up your dating app profile onward - and incorporates insights from behavioral science, original research, hands-on exercises, and stories about people just like you. It's designed to transform your love life. HOW TO NOT DIE ALONE will help you find, build, and keep the relationship of your dreams.

In this amazing book, he guides you step by step through the hidden world of dowsing that he knows so well. Simple exercises in the form of Uri mini-class activities, and fun games such as crystal hide-and-seek, teach the basic skills you need to dowse, whether you use divining rods, a pendulum, a forked twig or just your hands. The book then explains how to use these skills to find everything from lost objects to water, fossils, archaeological remains and even hidden treasure! Most importantly, Uri reveals how dowsing can help you unlock submerged thoughts and knowledge and evaluate vital choices in business, love and family life. Also including real-life case studies of amazing dowsing events, stories of celebrity dowsers through history and background explanation of the science of dowsing, this is a super accessible and fun guide to the most useful of the paranormal skills.

Can economics be passionate?... Can it center on people and what really matters to them day-in and day-out.... And help us understand their hidden motives for why they do what they do in everyday life?
Uri Gneezy and John List are revolutionaries. Their ideas and methods for revealing what really works in addressing big social, business, and economic problems gives us new understanding of the motives underlying human behavior. We can then structure incentives that can get people to move mountains, change their behavior--or at least get a better deal.
But finding the right incentive can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Gneezy and List's pioneering approach is to embed themselves in the factories, schools, communities, and offices where people work, live, and play. Then, through large-scale field experiments conducted "in the wild," Gneezy and List observe people in their natural environments without them being aware that they are observed.
Their randomized experiments have revealed ways to close the gap between rich and poor students; to stop the violence plaguing inner-city schools; to decipher whether women are really less competitive than men; to correctly price products and services; and to discover the real reasons why people discriminate.
To get the answers, Gneezy and List boarded planes, helicopters, trains, and automobiles to embark on journeys from the foothills of Kilimanjaro to California wineries; from sultry northern India to the chilly streets of Chicago; from the playgrounds of schools in Israel to the boardrooms of some of the world's largest corporations. In The Why Axis, they take us along for the ride, and through engaging and colorful stories, present lessons with big payoffs.
Their revelatory, startling, and urgent discoveries about how incentives really work are both revolutionary and immensely practical. This research will change both the way we think about and take action on big and little problems. Instead of relying on assumptions, we can find out, through evidence, what really works. Anyone working in business, politics, education, or philanthropy can use the approach Gneezy and List describe in The Why Axis to reach a deeper, nuanced understanding of human behavior, and a better understanding of what motivates people and why.

More than half of all startups fail-often during the crucial early stages of development when they need to prove their viability on a limited budget. But when it comes to startup success, one country stands out: Israel. Even though it is a relatively small country with a population of just over 9 million inhabitants, Israel has one of the highest concentrations of startups in the world, has the highest venture capital per capita, is one of the top countries in terms of number of companies listed on NASDAQ, and is well recognized as a global leader in research and development. In The Unstoppable Startup, Uri Adoni goes behind the scenes to explain the principles and practices that can make any startup, anywhere in the world, become an unstoppable one. Packed with insider accounts from leaders who have realized bold visions, The Unstoppable Startup distills Israeli chutzpah into six operational rules that will help you to: Build an unstoppable team; Foresee the future and innovate to meet its demands; Manage your funding and partnerships through all phases of growth; Dominate the market category you are after or create a new one; Build and manage an early stage investment vehicle; and Build and grow a healthy high-tech ecosystem. Far from mere conjecture, Adoni implemented these practices throughout his more than 12 years as a venture capitalist for one of Israel's most successful venture funds, and he continues to utilize these same proven startup strategies today in metropolitan areas in the US.

Set against the backdrop of the Israeli-Palestinian struggle, luckless Gazan fisherman Jafaar (Sasson Gabay) literally lives under the shadow of the Israeli Army (they've requisitioned his roof to guard the road below). Barely managing to scrape a living from the local waters, his life changes overnight when pulling up his nets one day he lands not fish, but a 110-pound Vietnamese pot-bellied pig. Unfortunately, Jafaar's problems are only just beginning. Aware that his religion bans him from touching or eating the pig, and unable to kill it, he quickly embarks on a series of hair-brained schemes aimed at offloading the animal once and for all.
