Are all the lights on?
Is there a parent in the house?
Are the windows shut and locked? "Double-check "
They HAVE to be if you are going to read this book, which is undoubtedly the scariest rendition of one of the greatest ghost stories ever told: "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."
While you may have heard of Ichabod Crane, Katrina Van Tassel, and the Headless Horseman, you've never SEEN them quite like this -- through the macabre imagination of the inimitable Gris Grimly.
So, take a deep breath and take a long look. And you may want to bring a flashlight to bed with you tonight....

In 1832, Washington Irving, recently returned from seventeen years' residence abroad and eager to explore his own country, embarked on an expedition to the country west of Arkansas set aside for the Indians. "A Tour on the Prairies" is his absorbing account of that journey, which extended from Fort Gibson to the Cross Timbers in what is now Oklahoma. First published in 1835, it has remained a perennial favorite, retaining its original freshness, vigor, and vividness to this day.

The story is set circa 1790 in the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town, New York, in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow. It tells the story of Ichabod Crane, a lean, lanky, and extremely superstitious schoolmaster from Connecticut, who competes with Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt, the town rowdy, for the hand of 18-year-old Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter and sole child of a wealthy farmer. As Crane leaves a party he attended at the Van Tassel home on an autumn night, he is pursued by the Headless Horseman. He is believed to be the ghost of a Hessian trooper who had his head shot off by a stray cannonball during the American Revolutionary War and nightly he rides forth to the scene of battle in quest of his head. That night Ichabod mysteriously disappears. What will Katrina do, and what does Brom Bones know?

Don't lose your head! The Headless Horseman faces off with Ichabod Crane in "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," a ghost story of enduring popularity that takes place at the time of the American Revolution. "Rip Van Winkle," another traditional favorite from the same historic period, tells the tale of man who fell asleep for twenty years and found his small town in the Catskill Mountains much changed by the time he awakened. Both are included-along with many other tales-in this classic collection by Washington Irving.

With these words, Washington Irving expresses the dilemma of every American artist in the nineteenth century. The Sketch-Book (1820-1) looks simultaneously towards audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, as Irving explores the uneasy relationship of an American writer to English literary traditions. He sketches a series of encounters with the cultural shrines of the parent nation, and in two brilliant experiments with tales transplanted from Europe creates the first classic American short stories, 'Rip Van Winkle' and 'The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow'. The result was not only a hugely successful travel book; it exerted a strong formative influence on American writers from Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe to Henry James, and is well worth rediscovery in its own right today. Based on Irving's final revision of his most popular work, this new edition includes comprehensive explanatory notes of The Sketch-Book's sources for the modern reader. In her introduction, Susan Manning suggests that the author forged a new idiom, the 'Literary Picturesque', to accommodate and turn to advantage his dilemma of dual literary allegiances. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Washington Irving has long been admired for his writings on American lore and history, but his work on Islamic subjects, particularly his studies of Moorish Spain, deserve wider recognition. This edition of The Alhambra, here republished in facsimile from the 1908 edition, complete with illustrations by Joseph Pennell, presents a welcome opportunity to reassess Irving's European writings. The author first visited Granada in 1828, and revisited the city many times, living within the precincts of the Alhambra and having access to the many historical documents housed there. He later composed his two-volume work Mahomet and His Successors (1849-50), derived from original sources held in Granada. The Alhambra is a more personal study, reflecting the author's enchantment with the splendours of the palace and his intimate knowledge of the history of the Moors in Spain.

Eight centuries of Moorish domination had made Spain the most civilized and enlightened country in Europe. Granada, capital of the province bearing the same name, had become one of the greatest European cities, with the Alhambra palace and the magnificent Generalife representing the peak of Moorish architectural brilliance. The fifteenth century saw the rise of the Catholic kings and, with the fall of the Moorish rulers, came the end of the city's prosperity and importance. This chronicle traces the fall of Granada, from the initial struggles between Moor and Christian in 1478, to the final capitulation of the city in 1481 following many bitter and bloody battles. Washington Irving ( 1783-1859) was the first American man of letters to receive international recognition. He travelled widely in Europe and Spain, studying in the libraries of Madrid and Seville. The present work is based upon the writings of the Spanish historian Fray Antonio Agapida, whose unpublished manuscripts languished in the archives of various religious foundations throughout Spain until brought to light by Irving. This facsimile edition is taken from two-volume first edition of 1829.

A collation of the author's extensive writings made during his travels and studies in Spain from 1826 to 1829 dealing with the foundations of the Islamic faith.Washington Riving was the first American man of letters to receive international recognition. He in fact spent almost a third of his life in Europe, including several years in Spain attached to the American Legation. He travelled about that country from 1826-9, working in the Libraries of Madrid and Seville, and for a time living in the Alhambra. From these studies Irving compiled a vast store of information concerning the dominance of the moors in Spain, and also prepared extensive notes dealing with the foundation of the Islamic faith. Twenty years passed before Irving was able to collate all his writings into a single body of work. The resultant 'Mahomet and His Successors', published in two volumes in 1849-50, was well-received in both American and Europe, providing as it did an excellent introductory study of the life of the Prophet and the founding of Islam. The work remains of interest to the general reader and will now also attract the student of Islamic historical literature for whom this republished work, in facsimile of the 1868 edition, will be especially welcome.
