In everyday life we are baffled by the mystery of individuality of other people around us. This distinctness of personality and individuality is in fact as unique and distinct as are our fingerprints. The author has attempted to unravel the frequently asked mysterious questions: Why are some people happy and others gloomy? Why are some individuals productive and others destructive? Why are some people introverts and others extroverts; and why are some people criminals and others law-abiding? This book is written with the aim to promote our understanding of the most significant role of parents, family, teachers, mass media and the significant others in the unique personality development and character building of individuals of any society across the globe. Moreover, the last chapter of this book is devoted to the individualistic approach to understanding and treating epilepsy which is as mysterious as is our individuality. It is a mind-boggling question why do people kill themselves despite the explicit religious and cultural mores condemning the very act of suicide in most societies like the Pakistani society? What are the ends and goals which the suicidal person pursues and which are to him or her stronger than the gift of life itself? and why do some people give up life so easily; whereas most of us do not attempt nor think of attempting suicide even under severely stressful and distressing conditions? The main purpose of this book is to answer these pertinent questions in order to promote awareness and understanding of the helping professionals as well as the general public about the suicide methods and suicide precipitants for non-fatal suicide attempts in patriarchal society of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. It is hoped that this book which is based upon the indigenous research work of the author, will be of immense value for the researchers, practitioners, under-graduate and graduate students of clinical psychology, psychiatry, applied psychology, sociology and social work.
The political and religious terrorism can not be understood outside the context of the development process of the terrorists or the potentially terrorist ideologies; beliefs and life-styles; leader-follower relations; century's old deep-rooted prejudice and hatred; clash of civilizations; oppression and target selection process. I think lack of data and an apparent ambivalence among many social scientists about the academic value of research on terrorism have contributed to the relatively little research work on underlying dynamics of terrorism and its aftermath for the survivors. This is unfortunate because psychology is primarily concerned with behavior and the factors that influence and control behavior; especially the violent behaviors like terrorist attacks. Thus, psychology can and should provide practical as opposed to conceptual knowledge about the dynamics, consequences and prevention of terrorism against any nation and its ideology. This book is written with the goal to promote our understanding of the complex and mysterious phenomenon of terrorism as well as its aftermath for the survivors of suicide bombing.
