Born in 1920 and one of Britain's greatest engineers, Dr Alex Moulton has devoted his life to engineering innovation. Best known for his small-wheeled bicycles and interlinked automotive suspension systems, he has also been deeply involved in aeronautical engineering and spent many years working on improvements to steam power. Alex Moulton became a Royal Designer for Industry in 1968 and eight years later was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 1980, he was elected to the Fellowship of Engineering, and he has many other qualifications and honours. On 24th October 1998, cycling historian John Pinkerton interviewed Alex Moulton at his home, The Hall, Bradford-on-Avon. The interview covers Alex Moulton's upbringing and involvement with steam power, aero- engines, motorcycles and automotive suspension systems. It also emphasises on the development of the Moulton bicycle and Alex's reflections on the highs and lows of his lifetime in engineering.
