He was talking a little against time, studying her perturbed face and giving her an opportunity to recover herself. "This is my very good friend, Dr. Carew," she explained to the stranger. "Will you mind if I leave you alone a few moments? I want a little talk with him." Her companion assented with a grave inclination of the head, though the eyes still questioned. Dell sprang out. The doctor proffered his hand, but she hesitated a moment. "Let us walk here in the shade," she entreated. "Bess won't mind a rest." "How do you know? Don't you suppose Bess wants her luncheon like any human? Perhaps she will enjoy a nibble of grass, though that is of a very poor quality." He was getting out in his leisurely fashion. Then he took Dell's hand as if she were still a child, and they walked a few paces in silence. "I knew the confessions would have to come by and by," he said in a tender tone. "A year and more. All the naughtinesses and the perplexities that have been packed away." He was smiling gravely down into her face. Was there ever any smile quite like that? She recalled her first confession as she slipped her hand in his arm. "It is a new one," she cried. "Something that has just happened...
