Not illustrated. 1907 Excerpt: ...It is probable that there will be other warehouses in this State, but they will be much smaller than the one to be erected in Birmingham and to some extent subsidiary to this one here. The mission of the warehouse will be to provide a place where the farmer may store his cotton while the prices are low, and secure reasonable insurance rates. It is said that the cotton can be stored in such a warehouse in Birmingham at much cheaper insurance rates than if the warehouse were placed in some of the smaller cities or towns of the State. A member of the Farmers' Union and a man who is very much interested in the matter of getting a warehouse in Birmingham stated yesterday that the plans were to make the warehouse thoroughly fireproof in every way, equip it with a complete system of sprinklers with a large tank on the roof to be kept full of water all the time. The construction will be fireproof like that of the Warrant warehouse, which was built several years ago in Birmingham, and which has been a success. By taking all these precautions, he stated, the insurance rates would be very low and the farmers would be able to store their cotton to much better advantage than at present, with less risk from damage and lower rates of insurance. Birmingham was chosen as the central warehouse for several reasons, among which was the fact that it is the financial center of the State, and also that it is more nearly the geographical center than any of the other cities of the State. Brown Transfer & Storage Co. 193 It is stated that the investment in Birmingham will amount to about $100,000. When the warehouse is built it is believed that it will bring many farmers and country merchants to the city, which would mean additional business for Birmingham merchants.--Birmingham...
