BIBLICAL COSMOGONY: MODERN SCIENCE. Dr. Arnold Guyot, Professor of Geology in the College of New Jersey, has recently published a treatise on the above topic, irenic in aim and spirit. He is a man of authority among scientists, having before published a volume on " Earth and Man." His last book is devoted to the discussion of geological data, and the account of creation given by Moses in Genesis. Dr. Guyot's aim is to show a very exact harmony in the rocky and written records. Most theologians have accepted the adjustment offered by Christian scientists; and the shock to Christian faith in the authority of IM0ses has passed away without serious damage. Some there are, however, who still believe in the old interpretation of six days of twenty-four hours each--who accept the Hebrew Chronology as to the age of the earth and the universe. This opinion is harmless so far as they are concerned; but if a Christian teacher should insist on this belief as essential to a reverential belief in the Bible, he may do others much harm. It is always folly to quote Scripture against facts. The Copernican system of Astronomy cannot be overturned by quoting Joshua's command to the sun; nor will geology be invalidated in its material facts by any quotation from...
