As life expectancy increases in developed countries, there has been an accompanying increase in the incidence of age-associated dementia. This syndrome can cause a drastic reduction in the quality of life of the sufferer and place a heavy burden onto carers and the welfare system.;This text summarizes some of the research undertaken towards producing drugs that treat the symptoms of dementia or slow its progress. The approaches described in this work include selective agonists at post-junctional M1 receptors, growth factors, nootropics, calcium antagonists and modulators of amino acid neurotransmission. The aetiology of the neuronal degeneration seen in senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (SDAT) and vascular, or multi-infarct dementia, is also investigated in this book.
