"And when the tempter came to Him, he said, If Thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread."-I "HERE would be much to make the powers of darkness hesitate before coming to a final decision as to whether Jesus were the Son of God or not The evidence on this momentous point might reasonably appear conflicting. For instance, the manner of the Lord's birth had been so lowly, that, in spite of the marvels attendant on that birth, the sagacity of evil powers, and of the chief of fallen spirits, once Lucifer, son of the morning, might fairly be at fault. We know indeed that hell's suspicions were at the first aroused, resulting in the murderous attempt of King Herod upon the young Child's life. But afterwards when the Lord spent thirty years of lowly retirement in Nazareth there was nothing to direct the suspicions of infernal powers anew towards the Son of man, unless it were His absolute sinlessness as child and youth. When, however, at our Lord's baptism the voice from heaven had proclaimed, "Thou art My beloved Son; in Thee I am well pleased;" then it is likely would all previous suspicions be brought to a head. And further the testimony of John the Baptist, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world," cannot but have confirmed, we may suppose, in the mind of man's chief foe, the strong presumption that Jesus was indeed the promised Seed of the woman which was to bruise the serpent's head.
