Walking Alongside - A Theology for People-Helpers (Paperback)

Synopsis: Integrating counseling--theory and practice--with the biblical revelation has now been attempted many times and with considerable success. However, in Walking Alongside, Bill Andersen has attacked the connection from a different angle. His starting point is what the Bible says about people, and God's relationship with them. He has chosen, from biblical theology, major features that should characterize Christian life, and has used these as presuppositions for any form of people-helping, but especially for counseling. From here the task has been to trace their therapeutic effects in the lives of those human beings needing such help. Endorsements: "Generally winsome, personable, and accessible. An interesting and engaging piece." --Andrew Sloane, Lecturer, Old Testament and Christian Thought, Morling College "This book will serve a useful purpose, especially for those preparing, as Christians, for a counseling career. They will appreciate three things: the fair and balanced way contemporary writings are discussed; the fact that, on a few proposals, Andersen comes down strongly with disapproval, giving reasons for doing so; and the relationship between counseling and Scripture, with the conviction that basic biblical concepts can and should be wedded to one's counseling techniques." --David Stewart, former Principal, Bible College of New Zealand Author Biography: Bill Andersen is a Life-Member of the Australian Psychological Society, and is a registered psychologist, currently conducting a private counseling service. He was formerly Lecturer in Psychology at the University of New South Wales, Senior Lecturer in Education, University of Sydney, and Warden, Morling Theological College, where he lectured in twentieth-century theology. In 2010, he was a recipient of the award, Member of the Order of Australia (AM), for his contributions to Religious Education and to the work of Scripture Union worldwide.
